'I had to run to the store and buy my own clothes'

Dan Evans took the court against Bernard Tomic in a $20 shirt he bought himself after a bizarre snub ahead of the Australian Open.

The Brit was wearing a plain white shirt with no sponsorship in his third round clash on Friday night because Nike hadn't renewed his contract on the eve of the tournament.

"I'm just out of contract with Nike," the 26-year-old said before the match.

"They didn't offer me another contract. I just went to the store and bought a load of clothes the other day, plain clothes," Evans said.

"Aus $19.99, the shirts are," he said, adding that he "didn't look" how much his shorts cost.

"I was more worried about the shirts."

Evans was still sponsored by Nike at last week's Sydney International, but was left out in the cold by the sportswear giants for the Australian Open.

To add insult to injury, Evans said he hadn't had any offers from other sponsors either, although that is sure to change once the World No.67 makes his inevitable rise into the top 50.

But in a bright change for Evans, he went on to win in straight sets 7-5, 7-6, 7-6.

The victory was sweet revenge for Evans after Tomic's father John once said Evans wasn't even good enough to grace the practice court with his son.

He was asked about the shirts after the match, and his response was typically hilarious:
