7th Tackle: Cap probe halts Manly CEO hunt

Manly has paused its hunt for a new CEO until more details of the NRL’s salary cap investigation are known.

The Sea Eagles had formed a committee to select its next supremo, who will become the club’s fourth CEO in less than three years.

Plenty of high profile names had been flying around, including Titans second-in-command Tony Mestrov and Rugby League World Cup boss Andrew Hill.

We’ve also heard former referees boss Greg McCallum has expressed interest.

But with the NRL’s Integrity Unit grilling former staff in a bid to unearth any wrongdoing, the candidates must be experiencing some level of apprehension.

Wisely, the Sea Eagles have decided to draw breath and suspend their search for a few weeks until they’ve got more clarity.

The club’s lawyers are still seeking details about the scope of the NRL’s investigation before agreeing to release information on personal laptops and computers.

In the meantime, don’t expect a running commentary from players on the issue.

After expressing his frustration over having to field questions, Sea Eagles captain Daly Cherry-Evans this week revealed they’d been gagged from discussing the investigation publicly.

Cherry-Evans was upset over having to front the cameras for the first interviews after the investigation was announced, with chairman Scott Penn and football boss Bob Fulton both out of town at the time.
