Charles Oliveira has become the first fighter in UFC history to be stripped of a title for missing weight, sparking outrage among fellow fighters and fans.

The Brazilian was stripped of his lightweight title on Friday after missing weight ahead of his UFC 274 main event fight against Justin Gaethje.

Oliveira came in one pound over the 155lbs limit on his first attempt, before trying again while surrounded by a curtain and tipping the scales at 155.5lbs.

The Brazilian fighter was then given an extra hour to try and make weight but again came in at 155.5lbs on his third and final attempt.

Saturday's bout against Gaethje will still go ahead, but Oliveira is ineligible for the title if he wins.

However Gaethje can still win the gold if he triumphs.

Should Oliveira win, he will be named the UFC's No.1 title contender and get a chance at earning back his belt in his next fight.

He will also forfeit a percentage of his purse for Saturday's fight.

Oliveira entered the fight with a chance at sealing his status as top dog in arguably UFC's most competitive division.

Currently the UFC's record holder in submission wins and finishes, the Brazilian captured the lightweight belt with a TKO win over Michael Chandler at UFC 262 in May 2021.

He then made Dustin Poirier tap in a huge upset at UFC 269 last December.

UFC world reacts to Charles Oliveira 'disgrace'

Oliveira's lightweight peers, including the two men he's defeated for the belt, had some mixed reactions.

"Making weight is always hard. But thinking you’re on weight, then missing weight, just to have to go lose more weight after you’ve lost your initial sweat is a living nightmare both physically and mentally," tweeted Chandler.

Paul Felder tweeted: "Wonder if he still wants to fight at 145. I have nothing against the champ. But this is a disgrace.

"And I honestly feel most for Justin. What an absolute let down for everyone in the division."

It was the fifth time that Oliveira, a former featherweight, has missed weight in his UFC career.

"Oliveira’s career to this point has been characterised by his phenomenal ability to finish his opponents and a shocking inability to regularly make weight," Kevin Iole wrote on Friday.

"Five times in his UFC career he failed to make weight, including missing by nine pounds for a 2016 bout with Ricardo Lamas.

"He’d fought 12 times since that embarrassment against Lamas and made weight in each of them, going 11-1 and winning the lightweight title in the process.

"The fact that the problem resurfaced more than five years later when he’s a reigning world champion with all of the resources that comes with that is mind-boggling.

"Cutting weight is extraordinarily difficult, and it’s easy for a soft-around-the-middle sportswriter to criticise a fighter when he or she fails to make weight.

"It’s not like they want to miss, though, and they suffer through the sauna and the other weight-cutting techniques just like all the other fighters.

"Rest assured, Oliveira didn’t have bacon and eggs with rye toast for breakfast on Friday before the weigh-in.

"But when a fighter signs a contract, he/she does so agreeing to be at a specific weight at a specific time the day before the event. They know that months out from fight night."
