Federer reached out to him after hearing of his plight, sending him the following message: "Get well soon Marc and tell me when you're ready and I'll play tennis with you."

The Swiss maestro is clearly a man of his word, following through with his invitation on Tuesday and bringing some delight to the young fan.

Federer has been a man of the people during this year's US Open, earlier in the tournament taking a practice session to a public court in Central Park.

He also enjoyed another brilliant moment with a young fan when he was put on the spot during a press conference.

The 19-time grand slam champion kept alive his chances of a 20th with a vintage straight-sets win over Philipp Kohlschreiber on Tuesday.
