Novak Djokovic caught in telling reveal amid message to Nick Kyrgios

Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic has baffled some fans after telling Nick Kyrgios he will buy him dinner in New York, despite his current vaccination status not allowing him into the US.

Djokovic and Kyrgios struck up a 'bromance' heading into their Wimbledon final with the pair agreeing to share dinner together - the winner having to pay - before the World No.7 claimed his 21st grand slam title at the All England Club.

While the pair have not always seen eye-to-eye, Kyrgios even suggested the duo could 'go nuts' at a nightclub after dinner.

In Djokovic's post-match Wimbledon speech, he shared some kind worlds for the Australian.

"I really respect you a lot, you are an amazing talent and now everything is starting to come together for you," the 35-year-old champion said.

"I never thought I would say so many nice things about you considering the relationship. OK it's officially a bromance.

"The winner buys dinner — that's why he lost. I don't know if we're going to make it happen tonight but this is the start of a wonderful relationship between us.

"I didn't respond to the nightclub question because my wife was next to me but let's start with dinner and drinks."

Kyrgios was then spotted sending Djokovic a message about the post-tournament dinner after having not been invited.

"Where is my dinner?" the enigmatic Aussie asked Djokovic on Instagram.

And to the surprise of many, Djokovic said he would buy Kyrgios dinner before the US Open in New York.

"Sorry mate. I called all the restaurants in London on Sunday night and there was no tables available," Djokovic wrote.

"Dinner is on me in New York."

Djokovic finished with a worried emoji and fingers crossed.

But as it currently stands, Djokovic won't be allowed into the US due to all unvaccinated travellers being unable to enter the country.

Djokovic has already conceded that Wimbledon was most likely the last grand slam he could play in 2022.

After winning Wimbledon, the Serb admitted that he wouldn't be travelling to the US at this stage.

"It is a weird situation," he said in his post-match press conference.

"I am on vacation. It has been quite an exhausting and demanding period for me. I got what I wanted here.

"I'll wait hopefully for some good news [a change of policy] from the US. I'm not vaccinated and I'm not planning to get vaccinated. I don't think exemption is realistically possible.

"We'll have to see what the schedule looks like then. I doubt I'll chase points. Things have changed in the last year and a half for me.

"I achieved the historic weeks of being ranked No.1, that I worked for all my life. Now I prioritise slams and big tournaments where I feel good.

Djokovic did say he would not rule out the chance of being granted an exemption to play at the US Open.

And it appears Djokovic is still clinging to the chance either border rules will change or an exemption will be granted so he can follow through with that dinner for Kyrgios.
