Lochte, who won gold in the 4x200m freestyle relay is said to have returned to the athletes village in a safe condition, however International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams says Lochte has told US team officials reports of the incident are not true.

"I can tell you the story is absolutely not true," Adams told reporters, after receiving a message on his mobile phone.

"It (the message) is from USOC (United States Olympic Committee). It's a false story."
