Reece Walsh at centre of massive Broncos boost amid brutal Tristan Sailor development

The Broncos fullback is a strong chance of making a shock comeback against the Dolphins on Friday.

Broncos star Reece Walsh is in line to make a shock return from injury weeks ahead of schedule. The Maroons fullback is expected to return to the Broncos lineup against the Dolphins on Friday night in place of Tristan Sailor.

It was initially reported that the 21-year-old would miss up to six weeks after a controversial incident with Taylan May saw him fracture his cheekbone in the NRL grand final rematch a fortnight ago. But in positive news for Brisbane fans, the No.1 is expected to make his return against the table-topping Dolphins.

On Monday, Walsh trained in bright pink headgear at fullback and is anticipated to play in his new accessory as a way of protecting his fractured cheek. Kotoni Staggs said the return of Queensland fullback was "a big boost" for the side. "Reece has done everything right to be back in the team," Staggs said.

"All of his rehab went well and it is good to have him back out on the park doing what he does best. One thing he has picked up is how he goes about (rehabbing) his injuries. He got on top of everything and has got back earlier than expected - that is him doing all the hard yards people don't really see."

But with Walsh's return comes expected misfortune for Sailor, who despite impressing in the 21-year-old's absence is anticipated to drop out of the 17 altogether. On Monday, Sailor trained with the reserve grade team and looks set to return to Queensland Cup unless Kevin Walters chooses to name him on the bench for Friday night's clash.

While Jock Madden trained at halfback in place of Adam Reynolds, who is expected to miss at least a few weeks. While Corey Oates is in line to take the injured Deine Mariner's spot on the wing.

Ezra Mam also picked up a knock at Monday's training session and was seen limping to the dressing room in clear discomfort. However, team officials say it is nothing more than a cork and he is not in any doubt for Brisbane's clash with the Dolphins.

Tristan Sailor eager to gain a permanent spot in Broncos side

After playing second fiddle to Walsh in 2024, many have called for coach Kevin Walters to use Sailor off the bench this year due to his X-factor, with calls only growing after the youngster shone in his two outings at fullback. Sailor - son of NRL great Wendell Sailor - had to wait until round four to get a match but since returning to the side has made a strong case to stay in the 17 even with Walsh's looming return.

Tyson Smoothy is the bench hooker for the Broncos and the man who Sailor will likely have to beat out if he is to retain his place in the side against the Dolphins. Oates had been also on the bench for the last two matches but is expected to start on the wing with Mariner out for several weeks. However, Oates' bench spot will almost certainly be taken by a forward.
