'Hit the wrong button': Aussie batsman's 'worst run ever'

Veteran Aussie batsman Mark Cosgrove has been brutally trolled on social media after a moment to forget for his Leicestershire side in English county cricket.

Cosgrove made a name for himself recently when video of him purposely 'heading' a short-pitched delivery left cricket viewers in stitches.

The cult figure was at it again in one of the most bizarre brain snaps he’s surely suffered in a long career.

Cosgrove's side were thrashed by 291 runs in Cardiff after being set 424 to win by Glamorgan in their division two clash.

The 35-year-old had a chance to make amends for his duck in the first innings but things went horribly and inexplicably wrong in his second dig.

Leicestershire started the final day on 2-33 and Cosgrove gave his side faint hope of salvaging an unlikely draw after withstanding 158 balls for just 28 runs.

What on earth was Mark Cosgrove thinking with this attempted run.

However, the Aussie's patience and determination came undone in an instant, during a passage that Wisden Cricket suggested could have been the worst attempt at a run in history.

The left-handed batsman clipped a ball straight to the man stationed at bat pad.

The fielder gathered the ball metres away from where Cosgrove stood at the crease and instantly fired it back at the wicketkeeper.

Cosgrove incredibly must have thought the ball had beaten the fielder and started taking off for what turned out to be a suicidal attempted run.

The wicketkeeper had Cosgrove's bails off in an instant, leaving viewers to compare the inexplicable brain fade to a hilarious video gaming mishap.

Veteran batsman’s header goes viral

Cosgrove is beginning to make a habit of endearing himself to cricket followers courtesy of weird and wonderful acts while batting.

The batsman had social media users in hysterics recently when video surfaced of him purposely 'heading' a short-pitched delivery with his helmet.

The Aussie appeared to intentionally put his helmet in the path of the ball and almost headered it away - football style.

The ball went straight to first slip off Cosgrove’s noggin, almost as if he was giving the fielder some catching practice.

Video of the bizarre moment went viral on social media.

Fortunately for Cosgrove on that occasion it was just his helmet and not his ego that took a battering.

As for the attempted run, it might take the Aussie a very long time to live that one down.
