7th Tackle: Mounties kick in to give Leukaemia the boot

In April this year, Sage Wilder was a young footy player with the world at his feet.

The 22-year-old Sharks junior was steadily rising through the ranks with Canberra’s feeder club, Mounties, switching between lock and hooker.

He was super fit and even more dedicated.

Then, around Easter, he experienced pain in his upper body.

After a few days it became unbearable and he needed time off work.

He had no choice but to visit a doctor and undergo blood tests. The result was shocking: Leukaemia.

Wilder’s season – and life - was turned upside down in the blink of an eye.

Instead of returning to training, he was admitted to hospital. Blood transfusions and chemotherapy have followed.

He’s been away from his team mates for months, but Mounties haven’t forgotten.

At midday next Sunday – August 20 – the club will host a fundraiser for Wilder.

It will be MC-ed by former Rooster and Rabbitoh Jimmy Smith, a part-time host with our good mates from Sky Sports Big Sports Breakfast.
