Glenn Maxwell in further setback as cricket fans erupt over Parthiv Patel's 'overrated' swipe

The Aussie is struggling for form in the IPL and a former player let him know.

Former Indian cricketer Parthiv Patel has taken a swipe at Glenn Maxwell labelling him 'overrated' after the Australia's worrying form heading into the T20 World Cup continued in his latest IPL flop. Maxwell recently took a break from the Royal Challengers Bangalore, having dropped himself, to take a "mental and physical break" from cricket. The World Cup winner was then revealed to be battling a hip injury during his batting woes.

He returned last week and took a wicket with figures of 1-28 off three overs. However, Maxwell didn't need to bat in the Royal Challengers Bangalore win against the Titans. The RCB once again took on the Titans and Maxwell was called upon to help his team.

Chasing a modest total of 147, Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis got RCB off to a brilliant start with the first wicket falling at 1-92. After a small collapse, Maxwell came in at 3-103 with his team only needing 45 runs to win the game.

And Maxwell wasn't able to shake off the criticism over his form having fallen for four runs off three balls. Maxwell's form has been worrying since the start of the IPL tournament. His last seven innings read: 0, 3, 28, 0, 1, 0, 4. Maxwell averages five in this year's IPL.

Maxwell was, as expected, selected in Australia's T20 World Cup squad for the tournament in the US and West Indies. Although his form will be a worry for George Bailey and the team. And in a brutal swipe, former Indian batter Patel claimed Maxwell was the 'most overrated player in the history of the IPL'.

Patel's comments caused huge debate. Many feel Patel's comments were disrespectful with Maxwell having showed his class multiple times across his years in the competition. Others felt Patel was correct with Maxwell's numbers in recent years not living up to his hype. Regardless, Maxwell has proven himself on the international stage and Patel's comments certainly divided fans.

Regardless of his IPL form, it is hard to see Maxwell losing his position in the Aussie XI with his explosive batting a huge part of the team's make-up. Maxwell was joined in the squad by allrounders Marcus Stoinis and Cameron Green.

In April, Maxwell admitted he needed to step back from the IPL and take a break. This was his call as his form dipped during the tournament. "I have been in this situation before in the past, where you can keep playing and dig yourself into a hole," he said.

"Now is actually the best time to give myself a mental and physical break. With our results this year, it was quite an easy decision. We haven’t been playing as well as we would have liked as a team, and the results show that.

"My personal results have reflected the results we have had. Pretty big deficiency straight after the Powerplay and the middle overs, which have been an area of strength of mine the last couple of seasons. I felt like I wasn’t contributing in a positive way and it felt like, with the position we find ourselves at the table, to give someone else the opportunity to try their wares and hopefully, someone can make the spot their own.”
