Matildas captain Sam Kerr has put an online troll firmly in their place with a perfectly crafted response to a shocking hate post.

Kerr has been making waves on social media in recent weeks, courtesy of her new relationship with US women's football star, Kristie Mewis.

Rumours of the relationship began to swirl during the Tokyo Olympic Games after the pair were seen embracing at the end of Australia's defeat against USA in the bronze medal game.

However, it was an incident earlier in the Games that has resurfaced after Kerr copped some ugly abuse from a user on social media.

The person's anger was focused around a photo of the Matildas posing for a photo at the Olympics behind an Aboriginal flag.

Controversial politician and One Nation leader Pauline Hansen described the image at the time as a "token PC gesture that only inflames division" and implored Prime Minister Scott Morrison to act.

Now the Matildas star has hit back at some of the anger around it, after one user on social media claimed Kerr "forced" her teammates to pose in front of the Aboriginal flag.

“Can’t stand her as a human being as she has no respect for the Australian flag she forced her team mates to hold a flag that is a privately owned flag instead the true Australian flag that is unaustralian and that is truth telling," the shocking post read.

In a brilliant takedown of the troll, Kerr informed the user that it was a move that was "decided by the whole team", before imploring the person to stop following her if he couldn't stand her.

The Matildas skipper even signed off by wishing the hater "a great day", with her classy response applauded by fans on social media.

Sam Kerr snaps lighting up social media

Last month, an Instagram snap of Mews and Kerr kissing in a pool with cocktails in hand sent social media into meltdown.

The post showed the pair lying together on an inflatable with a drink in hand, clearly enjoying some rest and relaxation after their taxing Olympic Games campaign.

Mewis captioned the photo with the word, "Kerrching", with the post garnering more than 76,000 likes and 1200 comments since it was published.

Earlier this month, Kerr confirmed the romance on social media, posting a photo of the pair kissing.

The 27-year-old posted a photo showing her holding a Polaroid snap of Mewis sitting on her lap as they shared a kiss.

Kerr tagged Mewis in the caption, adding a red love heart emoji.

Mewis also shared a photo of her and Kerr looking very loved-up.

Kerr recently split with Nikki Stanton - also an American football player - in the lead-up to the Tokyo Olympics.

The pair had been together for seven years, but Kerr reportedly told friends she had “fallen out of love” with Stanton.

Kerr and Stanton have since unfollowed each other on Instagram.
