Sam Kerr breaks drought amid Mary Fowler's frustration in Women's Super League

Sam Kerr has capped off an incredible week after returning to the scoresheet in England on another frustrating day for her Matildas teammate Mary Fowler. The personal lives of the Aussie women's football stars have dominated the headlines in recent days but as she has done so many times for Chelsea in the Women's Super League, Kerr let her actions on the pitch do the talking.

The Matildas captain has started the season slowly for Chelsea after battling injury concerns and a trip back home for Australia's recent Olympic Games qualifiers. However, Kerr returned to her scoring ways with a deadly strike in the Blues' comfortable 3-0 win over Everton.

Prior to the match against the Toffees, Kerr only had one goal to her name courtesy of a strike against West Ham and was rested for Chelsea's last match after her international duties with the Matildas. The 30-year-old was back to her predatory best at Everton's Walton Hall Park when she muscled ahead of the home defence to divert Johanna Rytting Kaneryd's low cross from the right into the net just after the hour mark to put the Blues 2-0 up.

Kerr's second goal of the campaign still leaves her well behind the league's leading scorer of the season, Tottenham's Martha Thomas, with the Scottish international already on six goals. It leaves plenty of work head for Kerr, who has already claimed the Golden Ball twice, as the season's leading goalscorer.

Australia's captain was heavily involved with Chelsea's opening goal after 14 minutes after her header in the box wasn't cleared by fellow Matilda, Clare Wheeler. The Everton defender lobbed the ball back carelessly for Canadian star Jessie Fleming to volley home.

Chelsea's win saw manager Emma Hayes' side strengthen their position at the top of the league, following rival Manchester City's surprising 1-0 at home to Brighton. The loss saw City drop to sixth on the table and proved another disappointing showing for Fowler, who has now failed to score for the Sky Blues in her last three matches since returning from Matildas duties.

Fowler's personal life has dominated plenty of the headlines back home, with the 20-year-old's relationship with NRL star Nathan Cleary leaving Aussie fans in a frenzy. Penrith's three-time premiership winner Cleary was watching from the stands in Perth as Fowler scored a wonder goal for the Matildas against Chinese Taipei in the Olympic qualifiers.

Kerr's personal life has also made the headlines in recent days, with the Australian captain and partner Kristie Mewis revealing that they are engaged. Speculation has been rife for months that Kerr and Mewis were preparing to tie the knot and the American player confirmed the rumours in a beautiful tribute to the Aussie.

In an interview with People, Mewis said Kerr has "just been everything" to her. "My biggest supporter, always listening to me nag and complain all, all of my crazy antics," the American said.

Kerr and her Chelsea teammates were also rocked by news earlier this month that their treble-winning manager Hayes would be leaving Chelsea at the end of the season. Hayes has been a central part of Chelsea's success across the last few years having won six Women's Super League titles and 14 overall trophies at Chelsea.
