Kristie Mewis has paid tribute to Matildas superstar Sam Kerr while confirming rumours that they're engaged. Speculation has been rife for months that Kerr and Mewis are engaged, and the American player confirmed the happy news on Friday.

In an interview with People, Mewis said Kerr has "just been everything" to her. "My biggest supporter, always listening to me nag and complain all, all of my crazy antics," the American said.

Kerr and Mewis were opponents at the recent Women's World Cup in Australia, with Kerr representing the Matildas and Mewis playing for the USA. The football stars started dating back in 2020, but the relationship only became public knowledge the following year.

Since that time they haven't been shy about sharing their love and admiration for each other, posting regularly on social media and looking very loved-up. Things seemed to have stepped up a notch in September when Mewis spotted with a ring on her finger in a number of snaps.

The huge rock was very visible as Mewis made an appearance in a promotional video for EA Sports’ new FC 24 video game, sparking a frenzy amongst fans. She was also spotted with a ring on her left hand in a photo posted to social media on September 4.

The superstar couple's relationship became public knowledge when they shared a beautiful on-field moment at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Mewis was seen consoling her devastating girlfriend as they sat on the pitch after the bronze medal game, which the Matildas lost to the USA.

Mewis revealed earlier this year that the first person she called when she was selected for USA squad for the World Cup was Kerr. “I called my girlfriend immediately. I called my parents. I called my sister,” she told Gaffer magazine. “They all have been such huge, huge people in my life through this process, because I’m sure I’ve been such a pain in the ass because I’ve been so stressed for so long.”

Football fans in frenzy over Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis news

Matildas captain Kerr has previously opened up about some of the negative backlash she receives for dating a fellow professional football player. “I think there’s this part of us where we’re both separate athletes and when we compete against each other there’s this worry that people don’t think we don’t take it seriously because you’re playing your girlfriend,” she said.

“That’s what I worry about most out of anything, is that our coaches or teammates don’t think that we can separate the two. I hope people know that when it’s training time or play time, it doesn’t come into it.”

Mewis said she was "proud" to be able display her relationship with Kerr on a global stage like the World Cup. “I think just being out and being two girls in love, I think if we can change one or two people’s lives and the way that they feel about each other and how comfortable they feel, then that means a lot to me,” she said.

Kerr added: “We’re not private people. I like sharing my story. I like sharing who I am outside of football.”

Kerr helped Australia achieve its best result at a World Cup ever (male or female) as the Matildas made it all the way to the semi-finals and eventually finished fourth. Things weren't so good for Mewis, whose American team crashed out in the group stage for the first time ever.

Despite her heartache, Mewis stuck around after the USA's exit to support Kerr and the Matildas. She was in attendance for a number of the knockout games and was spotted sharing some lovely post-match moments with her partner.
