Speculation is rife that Sam Kerr and partner Kristie Mewis are engaged, with the latter spotted with a big rock on her ring finger in a number of recent social media posts. Kerr and Mewis were on opposing sides at the recent Women's World Cup, with Kerr representing the Matildas and Mewis playing for the USA.

The football stars began dating in 2020, but the relationship only became public knowledge the following year. Since that time they haven't been shy about sharing their love and admiration for each other, posting regularly on social media and looking very loved-up.

But things appear to have gone to the next level, with Mewis spotted with a ring on her finger in a number of recent snaps. The 'huge rock' was very visible as Mewis made an appearance in a promotional video for EA Sports’ new FC 24 video game, sparking a frenzy amongst fans.

Many pointed out that Kerr and Mewis have been in New Jersey together this week - the perfect opportunity to pop the question? However the engagement may have occurred a lot earlier than everyone thinks, with Mewis also spotted with a ring on her left hand in a photo posted to social media on September 4.

Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis 'proud' about relationship

Kerr and Mewis' relationship was brought to the public's attention when they shared a beautiful on-field moment at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Mewis was seen consoling her devastating girlfriend as they sat on the pitch after the bronze medal game.

Mewis revealed earlier this year that the first person she called when she was selected for USA World Cup squad was Kerr. “I called my girlfriend immediately. I called my parents. I called my sister,” she told Gaffer magazine. “They all have been such huge, huge people in my life through this process, because I’m sure I’ve been such a pain in the ass because I’ve been so stressed for so long.”

Kerr has previously opened up about dating a fellow professional football player, and some of the nasty claims that are associated. “I think there’s this part of us where we’re both separate athletes and when we compete against each other there’s this worry that people don’t think we don’t take it seriously because you’re playing your girlfriend,” the Matildas captain star said.

“That’s what I worry about most out of anything, is that our coaches or teammates don’t think that we can separate the two. I hope people know that when it’s training time or play time, it doesn’t come into it.”

Mewis said she was "proud" to display her relationship with Kerr on a global stage. “I think just being out and being two girls in love, I think if we can change one or two people’s lives and the way that they feel about each other and how comfortable they feel, then that means a lot to me,” she said.

Kerr added: “We’re not private people. I like sharing my story. I like sharing who I am outside of football.”

Despite the USA suffering their earliest exit at a World Cup ever, Mewis stuck around in Australia to support Kerr. The American was on hand to witness Kerr and the Matildas producing Australia's best-ever result at a World Cup for a men's or women's team, finishing fourth.
