Football match abandoned after players chase referee off pitch

A football match in Bulgaria has been abandoned after players and officials chased the referee off the field over a yellow card.

The match, filmed by Nikola Penev, descended into chaos after the referee brandished a yellow card to a player after he was pushed.

This did not sit well with the players with one of them slapping the card out of the referee's hand.

The referee was backing up when one of the players attempted to hit him on the head.

The offical then started to run as players began to chase him.

Some of the rival opponents tried to stop the players from chasing him in order to de-escalate the situation.

Bulgarian match abandoned

After getting away for a brief moment, the referee called the match off after just 21 minutes.

This only sparked more dissent.

Fans and sideline staff got involved as someone is seen kicking a ball at him, while others chased him.

Footage ends with the referee running into the car park after the terrifying scenes.
