The highly-anticipated match between Germany and France lived-up to its billing after an exciting encounter was topped off with a number of 'bizarre' incidents, which included a controversial moment from Antonio Rüdiger.

A superior France outfit defeated Germany 1-0 after a Mats Hummels own-goal in the crucial Group F clash.

The first bizarre incident of the match in Munich on Tuesday involved a protestor who parachuted into the stadium.

In frightening scenes, the man collided with a cable connected to 'spider-cam' TV cameras and wildly careened towards spectators sitting in the stands.

He managed to right himself before crash-landing on the field, where Germany players Rüdiger and Robin Gosens were the first to approach him.

But later, Rüdiger was involved in some on-field controversy with France star Paul Pogba.

Rüdiger was marking the France midfielder when he put his mouth close to Pogba's shoulder, before wrapping his arms around his chest.

Pogba immediately reacted and complained to the referee Rüdiger had taken a bite of his shoulder.

However, there was no on-field action and no VAR review.

Football world reacts to Rüdiger moment

At half-time of the match, France legend Patrick Viera said on ITV: "When you see Pogba's reaction, it felt like a bite."

"I don't see what Rüdiger was doing there."

But Manchester United great Roy Keane replied: "It was more of a nibble than a bite."

However, fans took to social media to question Rüdiger's bizarre moment.

One Manchester United fan, named Charlie, took to Twitter in disbelief of the 'strange s**t' going on.

Fans also dragged Luis Suarez into the conversation, over his bizarre biting incident years ago, and mocked the pair.

Despite the incident, Pogba and Rüdiger hugged after the whistle.

Pogba alleged Rüdiger had taken a 'nibble' out of his shoulder, but as friends the incident was behind them.

"We're friends. This was nothing big. I think you saw the TV pictures, this is all over, this belongs to the past," Pogba said.

"I'm not crying for yellow or red cards for such actions. He nibbled, I think, a little bit on me.

"We've known each other for a long time.

"I felt it, I told the referee, he takes the decisions and he took the decision. He hasn't received any card and I think it's better like this. I don't want him to be suspended because of this."
