Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris share touching moment after incredible Miami Grand Prix feat
One of the longest F1 droughts has been broken after Lando Norris won the Miami Grand Prix.
Lando Norris has ended Max Verstappen's Formula One (F1) winning streak by claiming the maiden victory of his F1 career in Sunday’s Miami Grand Prix. In what was Norris' 110th F1 appearance, the 24-year-old managed to become the first man since Aussie Daniel Ricciardo in Monza in 2021 to win a Grand Prix for McLaren.
The Englishman, who started fifth, made the most of a safety car period at the Hard Rock Stadium to gain an advantage over Verstappen, before holding his nerve to take the chequered flag. An emotional Norris crossed the line seconds ahead of Verstappen, who had no answer to the Englishman's rapid pace.
Martin Brundle said on Sky Sports: "It’s not some crazy wet race. He’s beaten both Ferraris, and both Red Bulls fair and square. That’s what will be extra satisfying about this victory."
Danica Patrick added: "He’s got the personality of a champion. He’s fast, confident and funny. You just get that feeling that someday he’s going to win a championship."
After the race, an understandably emotional Norris embraced his teammates before sharing a touching moment with Ricciardo in pit lane. The pair were teammates in 2022 and have spoken on multiple occasions about their healthy respect for one another.
After Norris' landmark victory, Ricciardo was beaming from ear to ear as he gave him a massive hug and uttered some words to his teammate-turned-rival. While Norris dropped an F-bomb and simply said it was "about time" he won a race.
"What a race. It's been a long time coming, but at last, I've been able to do it for my team and deliver for them... I knew on Friday we had the pace," Norris said in an interview after the race. "Today we managed to put it together. We had the perfect strategy. I've made a lot of mistakes along the way but today we put it all together."
Things didn't go as well for Norris' teammate Oscar Piastri, with the Australian finishing 13th. While Ricciardo was also well out of the top ten, finishing 15th.
Max Verstappen says Miami Grand Prix was 'tricky'
After having to settle for an unusual second place, Verstappen said the way the race played out was "tricky" but said Norris fully deserved the F1 win. "You win, you lose, we are all used to that in racing. Today was just tricky," Verstappen said.
"I'm happy for Lando, it's been a long time coming and it's not going to be his last one. He deserves it today."
Verstappen had a perfect start from pole position but lost his lead after he pitted for new tyres. The Dutchman had then made his way to second behind Norris, who hadn't made his pit stop when the safety car was deployed after Logan Sargeant of Williams had his race ended following a crash with the Haas of Kevin Magnussen.
Norris wasn't able to get to the pits before the safety car was called and went around for another lap, pitting under safety car conditions and therefore managed to retain his lead. The English driver then got off to a perfectly timed restart to break clear from Verstappen.
But even more impressive was from then out he managed to keep stretching his lead over the Red Bull man, who had no answers for Norris' pace. Verstappen had won four of the previous five races and sits top of the drivers' standings as he chases a fourth consecutive title. He will look to get back on top at the Emilia Romagna GP in Italy on May 19.
