Aussie captain Pat Cummins has revealed his father was watching him on from the balcony as he performed heroics with the bat in just his second test match back since his mother died earlier this year. Cummins was the hero for Australia on the fifth day of the first test at Edgbaston having scored 44 not out to help steer Australia to a two wicket victory in the dying Birmingham light.

Fans were left on the edge of their seat for the full day as Australia and England's contrasting styles collided in a rollercoaster finish. Cummins deservedly hit the winning runs on with a glancing shot for four as he ripped off his gloves and tossed his bat in the air in a rarely seen outpour of emotion from the Aussie captain.

Cummins has endured a horrid 2023 after the death of his mother Maria, who lost her battle with breast cancer in March. The Aussie captain opted to remain with his family after the tragic news and missed the majority of the Indian tour.

The captain returned for the Test Championship Final to lead Australia to a maiden title. And on Tuesday, reporters spotted his father celebrating on the balcony after Cummins made history in the first Ashes test.

And in his post-match press conference, Cummins explained why the moment meant so much to him and his family after a horrible year. "Really special. Dad's been here all week. I feel very lucky to have him here," Cummins said. "It's been a tough few months. My brother's been here all week as well.

"Dad was here in 2019 with Mum, so just having him here is just really special." Cummins admitted he went to Bruce Springsteen with his father last week, which was a nice moment for the Ashes started.

Pat Cummins overwhelmed after final stand heroics

After the match, Cummins was thrilled to have led Australia to victory having needed 55 runs with Nathan Lyon at the crease to reach the target of 281. Cummins said he was confident they could reach the total even when tension started to build in the final overs.

"It was nail-biting stuff," Cummins said after the epic run-chase. "When we got to maybe 16 to win and we needed two an over, I was pretty confident but it felt like almost from the first session of day one, it was 50-50 all the way along until about 15 minutes to go. For me, it's number one - the start of an Ashes series. Yeah, the number one."

Cummins and fellow bowler Lyon combined to chase down the 281-run target to record the nation's highest-ever fourth innings run chase against England since 1948.
