Sri Lanka batsman Kusal Mendis was arrested on Sunday after he was allegedly involved in a fatal crash that killed a 64-year-old cyclist, just outside the country's capital Colombo.

Police have confirmed the 25-year-old batsman was driving an SUV at Panadura before dawn when the incident happened.

The victim who was hit by Mendis' car sustained serious injuries and passed away as he was being transported to hospital.

Sri Lanka’s Daily Mirror has since released shocking CCTV footage allegedly showing Mendis’ car travelling down a narrow road before colliding with a cyclist.

The video also shows the damage allegedly done to Mendis’ car as a result of the accident.

The Sri Lanka batsman will now appear before the Panadura magistrate, most likely in the next 48 hours while police conduct an investigation.

The police investigation up to now has not revealed whether Mendis or the cyclist were under the influence of alcohol.

Mendis was recently named in the 16-player squad for a two-match home Test series against England in March, but the tour was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The 25-year-old has played 44 Tests, 76 ODIs, and 26 T20Is for Sri Lanka, scoring 5646 runs across all formats.

He was last seen in action in the three-match ODI series against West Indies in March this year.
