Crowd mocks Barty rival's raucous screams

Aussie Ashleigh Barty gave a cheeky response to a question about her Australian Open opponent who was mocked by fans for her noisy screams.

Barty pulled off a fighting comeback to beat Aryna Sabalenka in her first round clash at Melbourne Park but it was her Belarusian rivals' raucous antics that stole much of the headlines on Tuesday night.

Sabalenka's in-your-face approach was typified by a wailing shriek similar to Maria's Sharapova's that she frequently let out during points against the Aussie.

By the end of the second set and with Barty on the cusp of levelling up the first round clash at a set apiece, the crowd had heard enough and began mimicking Sabalenka during points.

With Barty up 5-3 and the Belarusian serving, the chair umpire actually had to interject - urging fans to stop screaming during points.

The irony was not lost on the Channel 7 commentary team, who suggested the warning perhaps should have been directed at Sabalenka.

When Barty did manage to complete her come-from-behind three set win, tennis great Todd Woodbridge couldn't resist a subtle dig at the Aussie's opponent.

Barty herself, also managed to take a cheeky dig at Sabalenka when asked about her extremely loud grunting and shrieking post-match.

"I knew it was coming but it was a bit louder than I thought," Barty confessed.

"I was prepared for it.

"I mean, obviously in the first couple of games, you get used to it. Everyone has a bit of a different grunt. But, no, you get used to it."

Barty dropped the first set in a tiebreaker on Tuesday night before storming home to win 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 against her Belarusian opponent.

It marks the first time in 14 attempts that Barty has won a grand slam match after losing the first set.

Barty's victory was the high point of a Tuesday to forget for the Aussies, losing seven of eight matches on a disappointing day.

Locals Ajla Tomljanovic, Lizette Cabrera, Destanee Aiava, Jordan Thompson, Alexei Popyrin and Thanasi Kokkinakis all bit the dust on day two at, with Alex de Minaur following them through the exit door late on a tough day for home fans at Melbourne Park.
