Backflip complete: Anthony Mundine set for boxing comeback
Anthony Mundine’s backflip is reportedly complete with news emerging of an upcoming fight with former kickboxing, Muay Thai and boxing champion John Wayne Parr.
Mundine, 44, has not fought since an embarrassing 96-second knockout loss to Jeff Horn last November.
He declared his career over immediately after the big-money fight – only to seek a rematch just weeks later.
While Horn quickly shut him down, Mundine eventually found his next opponent in the form of the 43-year-old Parr.
The Courier Mail reports the two sporting veterans will fight in Gold Coast or Brisbane in November.
It will be a boxing bout with a 75kg weight limit – four more than the 71kg catchweight limit Mundine faced against Horn.
Parr has not competed under boxing rules since 2003, having embarked instead on a long and decorated kickboxing career.
He signed his contract for the Mundine fight in a shopping centre on Thursday:
An exciting day catching up with Steven Wijangco for lunch to sign my contract for my boxing fight November.
Looking forward to announcing the news this Saturday night when young fighter Benny Mahoney boxes at the Pullman Hotel 😊. pic.twitter.com/qlZeAECSap— John Wayne Parr (@johnwayneparr) July 18, 2019
While November’s fight will be Mundine’s first in almost 12 months, Parr remains active in combat sports.
He will enter the bout on the back of a kickboxing fight in August.
“Yesterday I received a life-changing phone call with a fight offer end of November here in Australia,” Parr wrote on Instagram last week.
“Believe it or not after my fight in Japan (on) August 18 I’ll be back concentrating purely on boxing in what could be one of the biggest fight of my career.”
