Woman sues Michigan State over sexual assault case

Michigan State is being sued by a woman who reported that she was sexually assaulted by a football player in 2015, according to a report from ESPN.com.

The woman, who has not been identified, alleges the school failed to investigate her complaint and filed a Title IX gender discrimination lawsuit Sunday.

"My client is frustrated and wants to make a difference," said Karen Truszkowski, the woman's attorney. "We felt that we didn't have any other choice in this matter."

The lawsuit comes from a report that former Michigan State wide receiver Keith Mumphery sexually assaulted the woman in her dorm room on March 17, 2015, and states the school failed to give her counseling and academic support.

According to the lawsuit, the woman had been drinking when she invited Mumphery to her room. She "just wanted to hang out but Mumphery wanted sex. Mumphery sexually assaulted [her] in her dorm room," it states. The lawsuit says that Mumphery called her a "dumb white girl" and a "tease" and then left.

The lawsuit also states the school investigated her complaint twice, and after the university found Mumphery in violation, they did not ban him from campus right away.

Mumphery graduated from MSU in May 2014 and enrolled in graudate school as he entered his final season with the Spartans. He was expelled from Michigan State during his graduate studies and banned from the school's campus in 2016, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Just a few weeks after the reported assault, Mumphery was drafted by the Texans in May 2015 and played two seasons, however the team cut him two days after the sexual assault allegations were made public in May 2017.

Michigan State has not commented on the lawsuit as of Monday morning.
