2019 Rugby World Cup quarter-final
Venue: Tokyo Stadium
Date: Saturday, 19 October, 2019
Kick-off: 11.15am BST

Ireland face the unenviable task of trying to end New Zealand's 12-year unbeaten run at Rugby World Cups when they meet in Tokyo for a place in the last four on Saturday.

The All Blacks, looking to win their third successive title, last lost a World Cup match in the quarter-final of the 2007 tournament, against France.

Ireland, meanwhile, have never reached the semi-finals of a World Cup, having fallen at this stage on no fewer than six occasions.

The reigning champions finished top of Pool B despite having their final game called off by Typhoon Hagibis, largely thanks to an impressive opening weekend win over South Africa.

Joe Schmidt's side had to settle for second place in Pool A after a surprise defeat to hosts Japan.

Team news and line-ups

Ireland

Ireland have made three changes to the team that thrashed Samoa, with Rob Kearney replacing Jordan Larmour at full-back.

Robbie Henshaw steps inside to 12 as Garry Ringrose starts at outside centre, with Bundee Aki suspended for three weeks after his red card in Fukuoka.

Peter O'Mahony is preferred to Tadhg Beirne at flanker as Schmidt opts for experience, while Conor Murray and Johnny Sexton become Ireland's most-capped half-back pairing.

Ireland XV: Kearney; Earls, Ringrose, Henshaw, Stockdale; Sexton, Murray; Healy, Best (c), Furlong; Henderson, Ryan; O'Mahony, Van der Flier, Stander

Replacements: Scannell, Kilcoyne, Porter, Beirne, Ruddock, L McGrath, Carbery, Larmour

New Zealand

Experienced lock Brodie Retallick starts for New Zealand despite playing only 30 minutes of competitive rugby - against Namibia - since dislocating his shoulder in July.

Anton Lienert-Brown and Jack Goodhue are retained as the midfield pairing, with Sonny Bill Williams named as a replacement and Ryan Crotty and Ben Smith not even in the matchday 23.

Cody Taylor starts ahead of Dane Coles at hooker, while Jordie Barrett drops to the bench with brother Beauden at full-back once more and Richie Mo'unga recalled at fly-half.

New Zealand XV: B Barrett; Reece, Goodhue, Lienert-Brown, Bridge; Mo'unga, Smith; Moody, Taylor, Laulala; Retallick, Whitelock; Savea, Cane, Read (c)

Replacements: Coles, Tuungafasi, Ta'avao, S Barrett, Todd, Perenara, Williams, J Barrett

Score prediction: New Zealand 34-17 Ireland

Ireland's recent success against New Zealand - their only two wins against the Kiwis have come in their last three meetings - should provide some cause for optimism, but it would be a huge shock if they could upset the winning machine here.

Head to Head record and history (h2h)

New Zealand have won 28 of the 31 meetings between the two sides, including their only previous World Cup clash, in 1995.

Ireland finally ended their 111-year wait for a win over the All Blacks with a famous triumph at Chicago's Soldier Field in 2016, and also won the most recent meeting, in Dublin last year.
