Youngest NFL head coaches: Kellen Moore takes title after Saints hire
With today's news of the New Orleans Saints hiring Kellen Moore to be their next head coach, all of the coaching vacancies in the NFL are filled. Seven teams entered the offseason looking for a new head coach and the Saints were the last team to find their guy.
New Orleans is one of five teams to hire a first-time head coach for the 2025 season. Chicago signed Ben Johnson, Jacksonville hired Liam Coen, Dallas promoted Brian Schottenheimer and the New York Jets hired Aaron Glenn.
The New England Patriots and Las Vegas Raiders went with experience in their head coaching hires. Longtime New England linebacker Mike Vrabel signed on to lead the Patriots. He previously coached the Tennessee Titans from 2018 through 2023. The Raiders went with Super Bowl winner and former Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll to be their new head coach.
NFL coaches are getting younger than ever. Entering the 2024 season, the average NFL coach was 47.7 years old, the lowest average in 25 years. That trend continues ahead of 2025. Here are the youngest and oldest head coaches entering next season.
Who is the youngest NFL head coach?
There will be seven new head coaches in 2025 and three of them will be among the youngest in the league. At 36 years old, Moore takes the mantle of youngest head coach in the NFL from Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald.

Oldest NFL coaches
One of the new hires in this cycle will be the oldest coach in the league next season by a long way. Carroll is the only coach in his 70s and seven years older than the next-oldest coach.

Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton is also 61 years old but is six days younger than Jim Harbaugh.
