Liz Cambage brutally mocked as sledge backfires spectacularly

Liz Cambage might have the most swagger in the WNBA, but sometimes it can come back to bite her.

It did just that on Wednesday, when Cambage’s Las Vegas Aces were knocked out of the playoffs in the second round by the Washington Mystics, led by Kristi Tolliver and Elena Delle Donne.

The Australian again dominated, dropping 25 points, but it was a previous comment that came back to bite Cambage after the loss.

Earlier in the week, the Aces scored a crucial win to extend best of three series to a fourth game.

Cambage dominated the Aces’ 92-75 win, dropping a season-high equalling 28 points on 12-15 shooting.

With the Mystics opting to guard her with smaller wings instead of a traditional centre to negate her three-point shooting, Cambage took the ball down low and absolutely destroyed Washington’s defence.

The fiery Australian offered a typically cocky comment about it after the game.

“They have small forwards guarding me,” Cambage said.

“If they can’t handle it, get in the weight room or get out of the post.”

The Mystics, it would seem, took that comment to heart.

In lead up to the game, the Mystics took to calling themselves the ‘weight room crew’, led by Natasha Cloud, who freely admitted it was a petty feud, but that she would be the one to put it on the line when it comes to protecting her teammates.

“I’m the petty one,” Cloud said, via the Washington Post. “I don’t really get into the trash talk, but when it comes to protecting my teammates and having my teammates’ back, I’m the petty one with the loud mouth.”

Cloud got the last laugh against Cambage with the series win, even taking to the Aces’ logo in the centre of the court for some celebratory push ups.

The Mystics had every right to be fired up, with the series win against Las Vegas propelling them into the WNBA Finals, where they face the Connecticut Sun.

As for Cambage, after forcing a trade to Las Vegas earlier this year, the stretch five said after the game that she’s intent on remaining in Sin City for future season.
