Super Bowl 59 MVP: Voting explainer as Eagles QB Jalen Hurts wins award

The Philadelphia Eagles are in position to win the Super Bowl, but who will win Super Bowl MVP?

According to the latest odds, quarterback Jalen Hurts is the heavy favorite to win his first Super Bowl MVP award as he leads the Eagles to their second Lombardi Trophy. Hurts threw for over 200 yards with two passing touchdowns, and he ran for more than 70 yards and scored another with his legs.

The vote for Super Bowl MVP is made up partly of fan votes but mostly weighted by media voters. The results of the vote won't be announced until the trophy ceremony, but Hurts' strong performance has been enough to make him the clear favorite according to several sportsbooks.

Super Bowl MVP voting

The vote for Super Bowl MVP consists partly of a fan vote and mostly of a vote by 16 media members.

Fans are responsible for 20% of the Super Bowl MVP vote on NFL.com. The remaining 80% of the vote is determined by 16 members of a media panel, who submit their ballots around the two-minute warning at the end of the game.

Members of the panel can pick one player from each team if they so choose, though the ballot will only count for the selected player on the winning team. They also may change their selection if there is a late play that heavily impacts the outcome.

Given this year's Super Bowl blowout, it's unlikely either of those two qualifiers apply.
