Few things are more predictable than Wimbledon rain. The sight of Novak Djokovic winning on Centre Court is another constant. In the first match of this year’s Wimbledon on the main show court, the 15,000 inside were treated to both, in a match that finish almost four hours after the defending champion first walked out onto a court few feel more comfortable on.

The 23-time grand slam champion has not lost on Centre Court for a decade and, at the start of his first-round match against Pedro Cachin boasted more wins at Wimbledon than the rest of the world’s top 20 combined.

Not even a farcical rain break, which lasted over an hour and 20 minutes despite Centre boasting a roof, and saw Djokovic come out with a towel in an attempt to speed up the drying of the court, could curtail him in a 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 victory.

Trouble. Djokovic dispatches the forehand, three points away and seeing the finish line very clearly. Coming into even greater focus now, as Cachin frames a backhand into the crowd. 0-30.

A timely ace out wide, as Centre Court once again gets behind Cachin. Serve catches the line, Djokovic on the stretch sends the return long. 30-30. And now Cachin works Djokovic around the court, flicking a forehand down the line.

Another first serve out wide catches the line, Cachin unable to get that back in play. Djokovic sends a forehand long though on the run, 40-30.

Cachin keeping himself in it for now, two big first serves give him control of the game. That disappears somewhat when Djokovic grinds him down in a lengthy rally, backhand is comfortably long from Cachin. 30-30.

Is it break point? Cachin’s slice is called out, and that’s confirmed after a challenge. Break point it is. 119mph serve out wide, Djokovic can’t get it back. Deuce.

Cachin’s forehand just about catches the line and Djokovic’s slice floats long, before the Argentine seals the hold with an ace.

Djokovic has been pretty much faultless at the net this afternoon. Moving so well. Puts a volley away, before his move forward forces Cachin to go for a lob that floats long. 15-30.

Big forehand from Cachin is a good response, but he drags a backhand wide and Djokovic has a break point. Saved in emphatic fashion! Cachin with the big leap as he puts the smash away.

And now a bit of controversy. Djokovic charges after a drop shot, flicks it over the net and then tries his best to avoid clattering into the net. He thinks he has done so, only falling into the net after Cachin sent a backhand long, but the umpre disagrees.

For all Djokovic wags his finger, it’s a hold for Cachin.

Djokovic to serve at the start of the third. Stunning drop volley to get it underway, this could be over in a hurry if he keeps this level up.

Cachin still fighting though, moves up to the net well and puts the volley away. A glimmer of hope at 15-30. Looks like being more than that as Djokovic’s backhand is called long. He challenges it and it did clip the line - glare towards the umpire.

This one counts though, superb pass down the line from Cachin. Two break points. Djokovic saves one with a first serve out wide, and the second as Cachin fires a forehand into the net. Deuce.

Got to imagine Cachin is going to come under a lot of pressure her. Has to at least make Djokovic serve for the set.

Not a great start, two unforced errors and the defending champion is a couple of points away, but a good serve cramps Djokovic up and he can’t get it back. 15-30.

Finds the line with the forehand and follows it with a stunning return, right at the feet of Cachin. That’s much better from Cachin though, works Djokovic side-to-side and puts the forehand away. Big roar from the crowd. 30-30.

Great first serve gets him one point away from the hold, but the serve and volley doesn’t come off. Cushioned into the net. Deuce.

Djokovic goes for another perfect return, this time just beyond the baseline, and Cachin then comes out on top at the end of a brilliant rally. Drop shot was too good. There’s the hold.

And now Djokovic has three break points at 0-40, Cachin to the net and he can only watch a forehand from fly past him and land in.

First one saved, as Djokovic floats a slice wide. And so is the second, brilliant from Cachin! Long, long rally, 35 shots in all and it ends with Djokovic once again flicking the ball long. 30-40.

Third time lucky for Djokovic. Wears Cachin down, the Argentine can only send a backhand wide. There’s the break.

Djokovic: I don’t need Alcaraz to make me motivated

Carlos Alcaraz arrives at Wimbledon as the world number one, but Novak Djokovic insists that the challenge presented by the Spaniard is not what motivates him.

“For me, I don’t need to have Carlos or anybody else really to find that extra drive and motivation when I enter Slams because I know that I have to win seven matches to win a title,” Djokovic said.

“So whoever I get to face across the net, it doesn’t make a difference for me. I need to do what I need to do. Most of my attention is focused on my body and my mind, my game, trying to I guess bring it to the optimal state where I’m performing my best every match.”

Novak Djokovic will not come up against Nick Kyrgios again this year, after the Australian withdrew from Wimbledon last night.

Kyrgios, who was beaten by Djokovic in last year’s final, released a statement explaining that he had been recently diagnosed with a torn ligament having suffered from wrist pain.

The 30th seed was forced to accept that he did not have enough time to recover from the issue before he had been due to face David Goffin in a first-round match on No1 Court this afternoon.

Andy Murray was in upbeat mood after a Wimbledon practice session with Novak Djokovic, a decade on from when the pair met in the final at SW19.

The first of Murray’s two Wimbledon wins came in 2013 with a straight-sets victory over Djokovic, as the home favourite ended the 77-year wait for a British man to win the singles title.

Heading into this year’s championships, Djokovic is the defending champion and heavy favourite, as he looks to lift the Wimbledon trophy for an eighth time and in doing so continue his bid for a career Grand Slam.

Murray is unseeded and has not made it beyond the third round of a Slam since reaching the quarter-finals here six years ago, but arrives in upbeat mood after picking up titles in Surbiton and Nottingham on the Challenger Tour.

He played a practice set with Djokovic on Saturday, commenting afterwards that he “did well”, and the 36-year-old is confident that the next fortnight could be a successful one.

“I feel good,” Murray said. “I’ve obviously played lots of matches. Physically I’ve been feeling good. I’m ready to go.

“I want to go out there and perform at a level that I’m happy with. I do feel like I’m in a really, really good position to do that. I have the experience at this tournament. There’s only one player in the draw that has more experience of playing here than me, which is Novak.

As a child, Novak Djokovic always dreamed of winning Wimbledon above all the Grand Slams, despite not setting foot on a grass court until the age of 17.

Despite being a latecomer to the surface, it is here where he has found himself perhaps most at ease.

He last lost a match on Centre Court in the 2013 final against Andy Murray, and it is hard to look much beyond him as the men’s singles winner at the end of the coming fortnight.

Doing so would mean a fifth straight title at SW19 and put him level with Roger Federer in the record books with eight Wimbledon crowns.

It would also complete part three of the calendar Slam, something he has long aspired to but never managed to pull off.

He’s dropped a set in the opening round in each of the past two years, before eventually strolling through, so Cachin will be hoping he can take advantage of any slow start.

But after a perfect Grand Slam year to date, Djokovic will surely be on it right from the start and should ease into the second round in routine fashion.
