Wimbledon 2023 LIVE: Novak Djokovic vs Jordan Thompson latest reaction and result after straight-sets win
Wimbledon 2023 - LIVE!
Novak Djokovic moved into the third round and kept his Wimbledon title defence firmly on track as he beat a stubborn Jordan Thompson in straight sets.
Daria Kasatkina and Iga Swiatek dropped a combined four games as they cruised to victories earlier in the day on Centre Court, leaving the crowd relying on something special from Thompson, or something especially poor from Djokovic, if they were to take in any sort of drama.
Thompson threatened to deliver on what was asked of him, particularly on serve, but Djokovic does not really do shocks. Not on Centre Court, where he last lost a decade ago. And so it proved, Thompson keeping it competitive for large periods but the defending champion was comfortable enough in a 6-3 7-6 7-5 win. He will face either either three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka or Tomas Martin Etcheverry, who meet on Thursday, next.

Game, set and match!
19:37 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 7-6 7-5 Thompson
Good call from Thompson to let the ball go as he moved up to the net again, return flies long of the baseline. That’s long too though, Thompson off-balance with the forehand and the warning lights are flashing at 15-30.
What a time for that then! On the half-volley, at his toes and Thompson flicks it back over the net. Puff of the cheeks from Djokovic. 30-30.
Not this time though, Djokovic gets there and makes the pass. Match. Point. Djokovic.
TAKEN! Thompson nets the volley and Djokovic has a very hard-fought straight-sets win.
Swift Djokovic hold
19:31 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 7-6 6-5* Thompson
Holds proving a fair bit easier for Djokovic than Thompson at the moment.
Ball sits up for him in the middle of the course, forehand is good enough that he doesn’t have to hit another shot. 40-0 and the pressure is about to swiftly turn back on Thompson.
The Australian throws everything at the return, long. He’d given up on that game.
Thompson hanging on!
19:28 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 7-6 *5-5 Thompson
Big, big pressure on Thompson. Serving to stay in the match.
Holds his nerve though, Djokovic backhand fired crosscourt but soft hands from Thompson and it’s dropped over the net. That helps too, big net cord and it dribbles onto Djokovic’s side of the court. 30-15.
Backhand long from Thompson, skidded right off the back of the court to him. 30-30 - Djokovic two points away.
Nearly match point and nearly stunning! Superb work from Thompson to run down the drop shot and get it back, before Djokovic is about two inches away from pulling off an outrageous lob. Just out.
HUGE hold. Probably his best volley of the match, earns his first applause from Djokovic.
Thompson will serve to stay in it
19:23 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 7-6 5-4* Thompson
Brief excitement as Thompson launches the ball high into the air, threatens to spin back onto his side of the court but Djokovic is there to slap the overhead into the empty court.
Djokovic backhand lands right on the baseline, too good there. And we have the latest in a long line of Djokovic shots to earn applause from Thompson, slice winner down the line.
Thompson survives
19:19 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 7-6 *4-4 Thompson
Still no hint of a break in this set. Will likely only take one to win it.
Djokovic drops a return at the feet of Thompson, turns into a pretty effective yorker as the Australian moves up to the net. Doesn’t need the volley next point, another ace to add to the tally. Make that two aces to add to the tally. 40-15.
“Yep” - Thompson with more praise for Djokovic after a crosscourt winner. Vibe is much friendlier at one end of the court than the other...
Deuce, as Thompson’s volley spins into the tramlines. Dangerous moments here. Djokovic forehand looks long, and it’s called - he challenges unsuccessfully. Followed by a double fault though, back to deuce.
Very, very tight to another one, but it catches the line and Djokovic’s return is wide. Crucial hold.
Djokovic back in front
19:11 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 7-6 4-3* Thompson
Djokovic has been surpreme on serve all match, ace out wide gets him 30-0. Big ovation for Thompson next point though, he runs down the Djokovic volley and does brilliantly to win the point.
Even louder roar as he flicks a lovely backhand crosscourt and gets to the drop shot that follows, backhand winner down the line. 40-30.
Djokovic glares at the crowd as a timely first-serve seals the hold.
Nothing in it
19:08 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 7-6 *3-3 Thompson
“Too good” says Thompson as he watches the winner down the line. Nothing more to add to that.
Back to what we’ve become used to though, the Thompson serve getting him through the slightly tricky moments. Another ace, 40-15.
Return from Djokovic lands in the tramlines and Thompson once again levels the set up.
Easy again for Djokovic on serve
19:03 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 7-6 3-2* Thompson
Weak return from Thompson, before Djokovic gives him a taste of his own medicine with the serve and volley. A string of easy holds so far in this set.
And this is another one, lovely slice down the line from Djokovic and it’s a clean winner. Applause from Thompson as he jogs to his chair.
Thompson not going anywhere
19:00 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 7-6 *2-2 Thompson
Easy to think Thompson might have dropped off in this third set after the disappointment of the tie-break, but he’s got straight back to work.
Back-to-back aces give him control of the game, and he seals the hold with the trusty serve and volley.
Djokovic edges ahead
18:58 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 7-6 2-1* Thompson
Djokovic is a long way from his best this evening, back-to-back points where he sends shots halfway up the net. Cramps Thompson up with the first serve though, just as the Australian sensed a chance at 15-30.
And it turns into a routine hold, Djokovic still hasn’t faced a break point in the match.
Good response from Thompson
18:54 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 7-6 *1-1 Thompson
Thompson goes for a very optimistic challenge, about a foot off with that one. Bit of danger for him here at 30-30, but a 130mph ace is a fairly solid response.
A wild forehand from Djokovic flies long and Thompson levels things up early in the third.
Djokovic up and running
18:49 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 7-6 1-0* Thompson
So then, what does Thompson have left?
It’s all gone a bit flat after that tie-break, an inevitable feel to this result now. That’s backed up by the opening game of the third set, Djokovic racing to a swift hold.
Set Djokovic!
18:43 , Matt Verri
Poor backhand from Djokovic, keeps Thompson in it but he’s still a mini-break down. 3-2.
Big first serve out wide, 122mph and Thompson can’t get it back in play. 4-2. And he barely moves for that, another Djokovic ace. 5-2.
Has to win these two points on serve, does Thompson. And he does, first serve turns up for him. 5-4, two rapid points.
Second serve for the Australian attack... nets the return. 6-4. Two set points.
And it’s sealed with an ace! Djokovic two sets up.
18:39 , Matt Verri
Thompson gets the first serve he wants, setting up the comfortably put-away at the net. 0-1.
That’s tame though, slice is a poor one and Thompson turns to his box in frustration, met with the standard nods of encouragement. 1-1.
Djokovic ace, 2-1. And it’s followed by a Thompson double fault, that’s a mini-break for Djokovic. 3-1.
Tie-break time!
18:36 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 6-6 Thompson
Thompson opts for the cap mid-game, standing in the sun as Djokovic serves in the shade. The Australian goes for a cute drop shot, “no” is the shout from him before it even makes the net. 30-0.
Return from Thompson is long - we’re going to a tie-break!
Thompson stays solid
18:32 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 *5-6 Thompson
“Aussie, Aussie, Aussie”... Centre Crowd firmly behind Thompson. Crowd delighted then when Thompson pulls off a brilliant drop volley on the stretch, Djokovic thought he had done enough with the pass.
Ace out wide, hold to 15 and Thompson has guaranteed himself at least a tie-break.
On we go!
18:28 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 5-5* Thompson
Fair to say this doesn’t rank particularly highly in terms of the pressure Djokovic has felt during his career, but Thompson has got himself into a great position in this set.
Net cord again does Djokovic a favour, Thompson unable to adjust his feet in time and nets the forehand.
But that’s a lovely point from the Australian, works Djokovic around the court and then puts away the volley at the net. Deuce - he’s two points away from the set.
Another long, long rally... Thompson mishits the forehand. Djokovic steps to the crowd and roars again, not sure he’s delighted with the amount of support for Thompson.
Over to Djokovic...
18:22 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 *4-5 Thompson
Goes without saying but Thompson has to hold here. Would pile all the pressure back on Djokovic.
Sounds like he’s listening, rapidly moves 40-0 up. Net cord helps Djokovic to briefly extend the game, but an ace seals the hold.
Djokovic will serve to extend the set.
Djokovic keeps it on serve
18:19 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 4-4* Thompson
Big cheer from Centre Court after that Thompson overhead, they think it was in. It was out. Biggest clue was Thompson bent over with his head in his hands.
Ace from Djokovic, his third of the match, makes it 40-15. Fair way off Thompson’s tally of 12. A couple of loose slices though and it’s deuce, fist pump from the Australian.
But there’s the roar from Djokovic, backhand down the line seals a hard-fought hold. Level again.
No breaks yet
18:13 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 *3-4 Thompson
Thompson’s serve gets him out of trouble and it’s another battling hold.
It’s not been easy, but the Australian is still firmly in this second set. Let’s get ahead of ourselves - break here and he’ll be serving for the set!
18:11 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 3-3* Thompson
An exasperated look to the sky from Djokovic, as his drop shot fails to clear the net. Wild forehand from Thompson though, chance here for Djokovic at 15-30.
Thompson responds superbly though, first serve backed up by lovely touch at the net to just drop the volley over. And again!
But that return is too good from Djokovic, Thompson scrambles back to the baseline, can’t keep the forehand in on the swivel. Deuce.
And now it’s break point, Djokovic knows the serve and volley is coming, return is a good one and Thompson at full stretch sends the volley into the tramlines. Saved! Djokovic reads the serve, moves to his right but it’s still an ace.
Deuce. Again.
Djokovic rock solid
18:06 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 3-3* Thompson
Right then, can Thompson put some serious pressure on the Djokovic serve? Well, it’s 40-0 and Djokovic has hit about five shots so far this game. All very easy for the defending champion.
Thompson on the run, goes for a very optimistic backhand pass and it flies long. Yet another comfortable hold.
Second set in the balance...
18:03 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 *2-3 Thompson
Can sense a bit of frustration from Djokovic, not helped by a 132mph ace that he can’t get a racket on. The way he’s serving though, it will just take one break.
That could come here, Thompson getting into a slice-off, much to the amusement of Centre Court. It’s not a battle he wins.
He follows it with a poor drop shot, easily dispatched by Djokovic and the defending champion has a break point. Thompson saves it, Djokovic losing his balance as he goes for the forehand pass and he can’t recover in time. Deuce.
And Thompson secured the hold, had to battle for that.
Djokovic edges tight game
17:56 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 2-2* Thompson
Djokovic mid-air as he slams a backhand into the net from a couple of feet away. Not his best. Thompson then whips a lovely winner down the line, 30-30. This feels as close as he’s come to a break.
Huge roar of frustration from Thompson, as he moves up the court and nets what was a relatively simple volley.
Shout from Djokovic as the Thompson return flies long, there’s the hold. It’s getting noisy on Centre.
Thompson holds firm
17:51 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 *1-2 Thompson
While Thompson serves like this, he’ll be in the match. 130mph ace, Djokovic does not move an inch.
But that’s the risk with the serve and volley, Djokovic lasers a backhand pass down the line with Thompson still en route to the net. And another winner, this time on the forehand.
Djokovic does brilliantly to just get that serve back in play, then chases down the drop shot but too much on the attempted lob.
Djokovic levels it up
17:47 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 1-1* Thompson
Ruthless from Djokovic, he’s giving Thompson nothing. Steps into the forward and crunches a winner down the line.
First serve has just been so solid, Thompson getting nothing out of these return games and it’s another routine hold.
Thompson holds
17:44 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 *0-1 Thompson
More of the same on serve from Thompson, sticking with the serve and volley as expected.
It works this game, Djokovic a bit loose on return and the Australian is up and running at the start of the second set.
Set Djokovic!
17:39 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 6-3 Thompson
That’s now ten points in a row on serve for Djokovic, first serve not returned. 30-0.
Has that run ended, just as I bothered counting? No, call is overturned as Djokovic challenges and he has three set points.
He needs just one, with the help of a net cord. Djokovic takes the first set in half an hour.
Djokovic to serve for it
17:36 , Matt Verri
Djokovic *5-3 Thompson
A couple of lovely volleys from Thompson behind his serve, even Djokovic applauds the second. The latest ace then moves him 40-0 up.
And another one. A hold to love, and it’s over to Djokovic to serve for the set. Thompson yet to make any impression on his serve.
Thompson under huge pressure
17:33 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 5-2* Thompson
The rush to the net from Thompson was having some success in the early stages, but he’s being picked apart now. Djokovic finding his range, pass is too good.
First serve does the damage in the final point of the game, Thompson unable to get that back at full stretch. Djokovic all of a sudden one game away from the opening set.
Djokovic breaks!
17:31 , Matt Verri
Djokovic *4-2 Thompson
Serve and volley from Thompson - first part is good, second part less so. Volley sent low into the net. He goes for it again, smash lands inches long of the baseline. Thompson considers the challenge, opts against it. 15-30.
No need for the volley next point, serve clips the line and Djokovic can’t get it back in play. The defending champion responds next point with a lovely pass, deuce.
Break point Djokovic! His turn to come to the net, softest of hands with the drop volley and Thompson gives up on that one fairly quickly.
Taken. Bit predictable from Thompson, again up behind the serve and the volley is long. Djokovic a break up.
Still on serve
17:25 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 3-2* Thompson
The Djokovic serve isn’t too bad either. A couple of first-serve returns float long under Djokovic’s watchful gaze and he’s 40-0 up in barely a minute.
Another first-serve, another return out from Thompson and Djokovic edges ahead again in this opening set.
Thompson serve a weapon
17:22 , Matt Verri
Djokovic *2-2 Thompson
Thompson has settled straight into his work on serve at the start of this match. Swiftly moves 30-0 up.
He thinks he has an ace to make that 40-0, and so it proves after a successful challenge from the Australian. And another ace - hold to love. That one 131mph.
Djokovic holds
17:19 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 2-1* Thompson
Deep return from Thompson, even Djokovic can’t move around it quickly enough and he dumps the forehand into the net. Response is a first serve out wide that doesn’t come back - 30-30.
Forehand is long from Thompson, who then lobs the ball up to test the Djokovic smash. The defending champion passes that examination with flying colours.
Thompson saves break point
17:16 , Matt Verri
Djokovic *1-1 Thompson
Djokovic is dominating the longer rallies in the early stages, Thompson needs to find a way to shorten the points.
Like that - break point is saved by the Australian with a 130mph ace. And he follows it up with another one, Djokovic unmoved.
That’s a good hold from Thompson, serve got him out of trouble there. Will need plenty more of that.
Strong start
17:11 , Matt Verri
Djokovic 1-0* Thompson
Thompson tries his luck with an early move to the net, and duly watches the winner fly past him down the line.
This is an ominous start from the defending champion, forehand slapped crosscourt, lands just inside the baseline and Djokovic is on the board with a hold to love.
Here we go...
17:08 , Matt Verri
Djokovic to serve first.
Up and running for the final time on Centre Court this afternoon.
17:06 , Matt Verri
Two minutes left of the warm-up on Centre.
There is, dare I say it, actual sun beaming down onto the court. A shock for everyone here. Still a few grey clouds lurking though...
Over on Court One...
16:59 , Matt Verri
When Daniil Medevev was winning his first US Open title back in 2021, Arthur Fery was watching on his mobile phone on the London Underground coming back from a music festival.
The story goes some way to highlighting the David and Goliath nature of Fery’s undertaking against Medvedev on Court No1 both in terms of size – he is nearly a foot shorter – and stature – he is 391st in the world and the lowest ranked player in the men’s draw.
But on Wednesday Fery played with the same confidence in which he told journalists unprompted prior to Wimbledon that he had earned three As at A-level just half an hour’s walk away at King’s College School.
In the end, it wasn’t enough but there was still a respectability in losing 7-5, 6-4, 6-3 to the world No3.
Next up... Novak Djokovic!
16:50 , Matt Verri
The action continue on Centre Court very shortly.
Novak Djokovic and Jordan Thompson will be out in about ten minutes’ time. Just the ten years since Djokovic last lost on this court...
Game, set and match!
16:42 , Matt Verri
Swiatek 6-2 6-0 Sorribes Tormo
Swiatek has no interest in serving again. Yet another forehand winner brings up two match points, she wants this done and dusted right now.
Made to wait slightly, first serve from Sorribes Tormo is perfectly placed and Swiatek can’t get it back. 30-40.
But there it is! Swiatek seals a routine victory with a second-set bagel, as comfortable an afternoon as she could have wished for.
Elsewhere at Wimbledon...

On the verge...
16:37 , Matt Verri
Swiatek 6-2 5-0* Sorribes Tormo
Swiatek playing as well now as she has all match. Winners from the back of court, lovely touch at the net - it’s a fairly dangerous combination.
Forehand winner crosscourt, too good again and that’s a hold to love. Swiatek a game away from the third round.
Dare I say it, it’s getting a bit dark over Centre Court...
Double break
16:34 , Matt Verri
Swiatek 6-2 *4-0 Sorribes Tormo
Sorribes Tormo down 0-30... have to say this one is over if she gets broken again here.
Loose return from Swiatek helps her cause, but that’s swiftly undone by a double fault at pretty much the worst possible time.
And it’s ruthlessly taken advantage of by Swiatek, puff of chalk as the return clips the line and she has a double break.
Swiatek charge continues
16:29 , Matt Verri
Swiatek 6-2 3-0* Sorribes Tormo
Not that she really needs it, but Swiatek has had a bit of fortune on her side this afternoon. Four of five times the ball has flicked the top of the net and helped her out, doing so again here.
Also in her favour is the fact she’s fairly decent at tennis. A big forehand, an even bigger backhand and that’s another swift hold.
Break for Swiatek!
16:25 , Matt Verri
Swiatek 6-2 *2-0 Sorribes Tormo
We’ll start with the obvious. Sorribes Tormo could really do without being broken here.
Easier said than done, perfect lob lands just inside the baseline and it’s 15-30. That swiftly becomes 15-40 and two break points, Swiatek hammers a forehand winner down the line.
Swiatek breaks. Sorribes Tormo into the net, groan from Centre Court and the world number one is marching towards the third round.
Swiatek up and running in second set
16:20 , Matt Verri
Swiatek 6-2 1-0* Sorribes Tormo
Big roar as Sorribes Tormo comes out on top at the end of a brilliant point, great hands at the net and she wrong-foots Swiatek. 30-30 and a chance to put some early pressure on the Swiatek serve in this set.
Or not. Tame return floats long. The Spaniard then unable to keep the slice in place as she stretches after a forehand down the line. Swiatek holds.
Fery beaten by Medvedev
16:17 , Matt Verri
Daniil Medvedev has booked his place in the second round with a straight-sets win over Arthur Fery.
The Brit kept it competitive on Court One, particularly in that opening set, but it’s a 7-5 6-4 6-3 win for the third seed.
Set Swiatek!
16:13 , Matt Verri
Swiatek 6-2 Sorribes Tormo
This match is entirely on Swiatek’s racket - she’s had 13 winners and seven unforced errors in the opening seven games. Just the one winner so far from Sorribes Tormo.
Forehand is long from the Spaniard, and that brings up two set points for Swiatek. First one is saved, Sorribes Tormo with the drop shot and then puts away the volley as Swiatek flicks the ball up.
Swiatek takes this one though, flat backhand and she’s a set up on Centre!
One game away
16:07 , Matt Verri
Swiatek 5-2* Sorribes Tormo
Sorribes Tormo still grunting from her shot as the ball comes flying back past her. Double fault to start the game from Swiatek but since then she’s been dominant, completely on top whenever there’s a lengthy rally.
Drop shot is good from Swiatek, Sorribes Tormo does really well to run it down but the world number one is swiftly across to knock the ball into the empty court. Hold to 15.
The Spaniard will serve to stay in the set.
Sorribes Tormo stays in touch
16:03 , Matt Verri
Swiatek *4-2 Sorribes Tormo
Huge. Swiatek jumps all over the second serve, deep return and Sorribes Tormo can do nothing with that. More trouble for the Spaniard at 30-30.
That’s a bit wild though, forehand flies long and it’s a very welcome gift for Sorribes Tormo. First serve then sets up the next point, backahdn down the line put away and that’s a much-needed hold.
Over on Court One
16:01 , Matt Verri
Medvedev 7-5 6-4 4-2* Fery
Medvedev is closing in on victory against Britain’s Arthur Fery.
The 20-year-old has done well to keep it competitive against the third seed, but looks like the Russian will be easing into the second round very shortly.
World number one on the charge
15:57 , Matt Verri
Swiatek 4-1* Sorribes Tormo
This is getting away from the Spaniard very quickly.
A net cord means she can only lob the ball up, and Swiatek waits patiently for it to drop before slapping a winner down the line.
Simple volley at the net seals a hold to love in barely more than a minute.
Swiatek responds
15:54 , Matt Verri
Swiatek *3-1 Sorribes Tormo
Brilliant angle from Swiatek with the forehand... Sorribes Tormo challenges but that was well in. 0-30.
The world number one is starting to go through the gears all of a sudden, big winner crosscourt brings up two break points.
One will do! Forehand sails beyond the baseline from Sorribes Tormo and Swiatek is back in charge.
Back on serve!
15:49 , Matt Verri
Swiatek 2-1* Sorribes Tormo
The world number one is having a bit of trouble with her toss at this end, having to deal with the sun. Not something that has been a problem for most of the opening three days of this tournament.
Sorribes Tormo forces the issue, up to the net for pretty much the first time and Swiatek can’t make the pass. Good option for the Spaniard. The forehand from Swiatek then flies long, deuce.
Break point Sorribes Tormo! Again she comes to the net, again it wins her the point. Going to see more and more of this you’d imagine.
Taken! Unforced error from Swiatek and we’re back on serve at the changeover.
Swiatek breaks early
15:42 , Matt Verri
Swiatek *2-0 Sorribes Tormo
Two double faults from Sorribes Tormo, doubt the groans from the crowd on each occasion are particularly helpful either.
Couple of loose returns from Swiatek though, hasn’t quite found her range, but she moves to the net nicely there and puts the backhand away. Deuce.
Break point for Swiatek, as the Sorribes Tormo slice floats long. Under pressure right from the start here. But Swiatek is unable to take it, forehand low into the net. Already a fair few unforced errors from the world number one.
That’s far too good though, big hitting and Sorribes Tormo can only hang in the point for so long. Forehand does the damage there, another break point.
Converted too, as the Spaniard nets a forehand of her own. Early break for Swiatek.
Swiatek on the board
15:34 , Matt Verri
Swiatek 1-0* Sorribes Tormo
It’s an ominious start from the world number one. Forehand winner to win the opening point and she’s already very much on top in the rallies.
Second serve for Sorribes Tormo to attack, goes for too much though and the return sails beyond the basline. Hold to love.
Here we go!
15:32 , Matt Verri
Swiatek to serve first, Sorribes Tormo looking to pull off an almighty shock.
Up and running on Centre Court.
15:24 , Matt Verri
Swiatek vs Sorribes Tormo - due at 3:21pm.
That’s what the screen on Centre Court tells us. Here come the players... stop the clocks. 3:24pm. We’ll let them off.
In more positive news, there is even a bit of blue sky above Wimbledon now. No need to think about rain for the rest of the day, hopefully.
More one-sided matches?
15:20 , Matt Verri
So, just the 14 games in the opening match of the day on Centre Court.
Iga Swiatek and Novak Djokovic to come - not sure the crowd are going to be getting hugely competitive action there either, but we shall see...

Kasatkina 6-0 6-2 Burrage
That’s a really disappointing afternoon for Burrage.
Got things together briefly at the start of the second, but was otherwise a long way from her best on her Centre Court debut.
Comfortable for Kasatkina.
One game away
14:56 , Matt Verri
Kasatkina 6-0 5-2* Burrage
Burrage increasingly animated as she turns to her box, she knows this is slipping away.
Kasatkina holds, and she is just one game away now from the third round.
Burrage fails to take break points
14:54 , Matt Verri
Kasatkina 6-0 *4-2 Burrage
Kasatkina now motoring towards the finish line inside an hour. One break point is saved by Burrage, but the second is converted and the 11th seed is closing in.
Or not! Burrage has two break points in the very next game to get it back on serve. Has to take one of these. First one goes, as the slice drifts away into the tramlines. And so does the second - another unforced error.
Deuce.
Medvedev to serve for the set
14:47 , Matt Verri
Medvedev *6-5 Fery
Fery was extremely impressive before the rain delay, but he’s been broken straight after.
Three break points for Medvedev, the first two are saved... but it’s third time lucky. He will serve for the opening set.
Back underway!
14:40 , Matt Verri
Righ then, players have had a quick warm-up and we’re ready to get back up and running on the show courts. Yes, the roof is still open. Yes, that inevitably means it will rain again.
Reminder of where the matches on Centre and Court One were before the rain fell...
Kasatkina 6-0 *2-2 Burrage
Medvedev 5-5* Fery
14:33 , Matt Verri
The roof is being kept open, as the covers come off again. A strange reluctance to have the roof closed today, reckon it might be worth using at some point. That is sort of what it’s for.
The tournament referee is out having a walk around Centre Court, testing how wet the court is. Bring on the leaf-blowers...
Big relief!
14:28 , Matt Verri
A tough start for Jodie Burrage after losing the first set 6-0 to Daria Kasatkina, but she's back in this one 💪

Protest on Court 18
14:22 , Matt Verri
Just before that rain delay, protestors disrupted play as golden confetti and a jigsaw was thrown onto Court 18.
Tournaments organisers had spoken of “uplifted” security measures in response to recent Just Stop Oil protests across high-profile sporting events, including the second Ashes Test at Lord’s.
Dimitrov and Shimabukuro were in action when the two protestors came on court, with both quickly escorted off.
There has been a disruption to play on Court 18 - the anticipated/feared Just Stop Oil action.
Looks like protesters threw some golden confetti and ... a jigsaw of Centre Court.

Rain halts play
14:20 , Matt Verri
Well... that was predictable.
It’s started raining again at Wimbledon, which isn’t ideal when the decision has been made to keep the roof open on Centre and Court One.
We will have ANOTHER delay.
Burrage and Kasatkina 2-2 in the second set, the Brit broken have gone a break up herself. And it’s 5-5 in the opening set between Medvedev and Fery.
On the board!
14:08 , Matt Verri
Kasatkina 6-0 *1-1 Burrage
There we go!
A hard-fought hold for Burrage, but it’s a hold. Big smile from the Brit, even bigger cheers from the crowd. That should help her settle now, chance to to really get into the match.
Fery back in front
14:06 , Matt Verri
Medvedev *3-4 Fery
Fery has got it back on serve on Court One, and he’s edged ahead in the opening set!
Really impressive from the 20-year-old so far, Medvedev is being tested in the early stages of that one.
Set Kasatkina
14:00 , Matt Verri
Kasatkina 6-0 Burrage
Well, it can only get better for Burrage.
A fifth double fault gifts Kasatkina the opening set, just 19 minutes played on Centre Court. Burrage has managed only seven points so far.
Medvedev takes control
13:55 , Matt Verri
Medvedev *3-2 Fery
Britain’s Fery had made a more positive start on Court One against the third seed Medvedev, keeping it on serve in the opening few games.
That has changed now though, the Russian breaking to love to move ahead in that first set.
Double break
13:49 , Matt Verri
Kasatkina *4-0 Burrage
Kasatkina isn’t have to do very much here as she continues to motor through the set. 0-30 and sensing a double break.
Make that three break points, another unforced error from Burrage as the backhand lands in the tramlines. And there is the break to love.
Burrage has to find a way to settle down here, even if this set is probably already gone.
Burrage nervous on Centre
13:43 , Matt Verri
Kasatkina *2-0 Burrage
It’s been a fairly nervy start from Burrage, a number of unforced errors already and she’s chucked in a double fault too. To be expected on her Centre Court debut.
Kasatkina has two break points in the Brit’s opening service game, and needs just one. Another double fault from Burrage.
Some highlights to come later today
13:38 , Matt Verri
Jasmine Paolini v Petra Kvitova
Two-time Wimbledon champion Kvitova — she won in 2011 and 2014 — is again being talked about as a potential champion come the end of the fortnight. The 33-year-old won Eastbourne but faces an Italian at the highest ranking of her career who, while no expert on grass, should pose a challenge to her long-term tournament ambitions.
Jannik Sinner v Diego Schwartzman
Wimbledon clearly believe that Sinner is a future champion on the grass having been placed front and centre for a new bit of artwork to highlight rivalries at the tournament. He has yet to make it past the quarter-finals here – the same with any grand slam. Schwartzman has tumbled down the world rankings but is a former top-10 player.
Here we go...
13:31 , Matt Verri
We’re going to have some actual tennis.
Kasatkina and Burrage are out on Centre, Medvedev and Fery will shortly be striding out on Court One.
Now we just need it to stay dry and we’ll be set for a great afternoon.
More roof drama...
13:24 , Matt Verri
The roof on both Centre Court and Court 1 is now being opened. Organisers confident that there will be no more rain.
Play expected to get underway in the next 20 minutes or so, assuming it stays dry. Has certainly brightened up in the last five minutes.
Delay on Court One
13:16 , Matt Verri
Of course there is.
The roof was briefly opened on Court One, which pushed back the start time of this match, and while that was happening it starting rain again. Not sure that was a particularly brilliant decision.
So now there’s not much happening - Medvedev and Fery should be out shortly. Should be.
Play suspended across outside courts
13:05 , Matt Verri
Here we go again.
We managed an hour of play on the outside courts yesterday - less than half that today and it’s started raining again.
Players are off, covers are on, umbrellas are up and this tournament is going to go on until October at this rate.
Schedule for show courts
13:02 , Matt Verri
The action gets underway on Centre Court in about half an hour, with British hope Jodie Burrage taking on the 11th seed Daria Kasatkina.
On Court 1, the players will be out very shortly. Third seed Medvedev up against another Brit on Arthur Fery.

Standard Sport prediction
12:54 , Matt Verri
Swiatek will continue to face questions over how comfortable she is on grass until she produces a deep Wimbledon run, but the current signs are pretty positive.
She looked good at the Bad Homburg Open before retiring and breezed through her first-round match on Monday - the world number one should be far too good this afternoon.
Swiatek in straight sets.

Good afternoon!
12:38 , Matt Verri
Hello and welcome to Standard Sport’s LIVE coverage of Iga Swiatek vs Sara Sorribes Tormo!
It’s the third day of action at Wimbledon, and the rain has finally cleared after yet another delayed start. Fair to say we’re very much behind schedule with the tournament.
No such problems for Swiatek though, who will take to Centre Court later this afternoon regardless of the weather.
We’ll have all the latest build-up and updates from around the courts, before full coverage of Swiatek’s match which should come at around 3:30pm BST. Stay with us!
