Tennis world goes bonkers over 'insane' scenes at Wimbledon

German mum Tatjana Maria is the talk of the tennis world after keeping her extraordinary run going to qualify for the Wimbledon semi-finals.

The unfancied Maria was the First Lady through to the last four at the All England Club, following a 4-6 6-2 7-5 comeback win over fellow German outsider Jule Niemeier, who was making her Wimbledon main-draw debut.

Maria, 34, is on the verge of becoming one of the unlikeliest finalists in the tournament's 145-year history, with a 42-year-old record set by Australia's Evonne Goolagong Cawley also in her sights.

The German is aiming to become the first mum to win the Wimbledon title since the Aussie great in 1980.

The world No.103 is just the sixth woman in the open era to reach the semis after turning 34, joining legends Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova and Serena and Venus Williams.

"It's a dream to live this with my family, to live this with my two girls. Almost one year ago I gave birth, it's crazy," Maria said in her on-court interview after the win.

"I have goosebumps everywhere. I think today we made Germany really proud after our match."

And now-14-month-old Cecilia was her second child, too.

Her first daughter Charlotte, born in 2013, was watching on last week as Maria ventured beyond the third round of a slam for the first time in 35 attempts.

She'd never even made it that far at the other three majors.

Speaking to Eurosport after Maria's win sparked scenes of jubilation, a number of former players couldn't contain their excitement and admiration for the German and what she's been able to achieve.

"It is super exciting," Kim Clijsters said about Maria's progress.

"I was able to get to know her and her family - I’ve read about her, I’ve met her, but never really had the time to sit down and talk.

"But it is a great family, she is a hard worker, enjoying this adventure that she is living with the family. It reminds me of how my husband and I did it when we had Jada, so it is super exciting. She has already had a great result, but I hope she can keep going for a little longer."

Agnieszka Radwanska added: "It is very impressive. Having one kid is a challenge, having two kids is something insane.

"Big respect for her playing great tennis being a mum of two. [She’s] still playing good tennis and I think her game is also suited to the grass very well. She can use her slice and good serve, and I think it’s the perfect time for her - [it’s] the tournament of her life so [it’s] also interesting to see how she will do."

Martina Hingis added: "She is really fighting for her family, right? It’s amazing.

"It is a dream come true for her, obviously, to make it so far in the Grand Slam, in the draw."

Tatjana Maria sets up Ons Jabeur showdown

The German know faces her "barbecue buddy" Ons Jabeur in the semi-finals after the Tunisian recovered from a set down in Tuesday's second quarter-final to thwart Czech Marie Bouzkova 3-6 6-1 6-1.

Jabeur, the highest-ranked player left in the draw, is two tantalising wins away from becoming Africa's first women's grand slam singles champion.

The third seed said there's no one she'd prefer to play more in her maiden grand slam semi.

"I love Tatjana so much and her family is so amazing," the 27-year-old said.

"She is my barbecue buddy so it will be tough to play her, obviously.

"But she is a great friend and I am really happy she is in the semi-final."

Outside the top 250 as recently as March, Maria had lost in the first round at the 2021 US Open and 2022 Australian Open and French Open since returning from maternity leave.

That all changed at SW19 where Maria beat three seeded players in succession en route to the last eight - Sorana Cirstea in her second match, fifth seed Maria Sakkari in the third round and No.12 Jelena Ostapenko in the last 16.

"To be a mum of my two kids, for me that's the most important in my life," she said.

"Nothing will change this. I'm here, yeah, I'm in the semi-final of Wimbledon, it's crazy, but I'm still a mum.

"After this I will go out over there and I will see my kids and I will do the same thing that I do every single day.

"I will change her Pampers, I mean, everything normal. I try to keep normal as much as possible because what makes me the proudest is to be a mum."
