'Terrible scene': Wild brawl breaks out after high school basketball game

A wild brawl that broke out between two rival high school basketball teams in Phoenix, Arizona and even spread into the stands has resulted in numerous suspensions and been roundly condemned.

After Mesa Skyline High School defeated Laveen Cesar Chavez 63-56 for the Phoenix Union High School District Coyote Classic boys basketball championship over the weekend, punches were thrown between the two teams as they lined up to shake hands.

Police were called to break up the fight, with parents in the stands getting involved as well.

Phoenix newspaper The Arizona Republic first obtained footage of the brawl, which was sparked by a Cesar Chavez player throwing a punch.

After investigating the incident, the district announced several sanctions via statement, which included any player involved in the brawl being suspended for a minimum of three games, Cesar Chavez forfeiting their next game, and issuing an apology to Mesa Skyline.

Arizona Interscholastic Association Executive Director David Hines told the Arizona Republic the brawl cast their entire system in a poor light.

“It was ugly," Hines said.

“The video is not good. Parents have to understand they cannot get involved.

“I understand they want to protect their kids. The schools will take appropriate consequences.”

Mesa Skyline coach James Capriotti told the newspaper there had been a ‘very volatile’ atmosphere throughout the match.

“It was a terrible scene," Capriotti said.

“It was a really bad look after a really good game.”
