Why the Eagles won't be wearing their amazing Kelly Green alternate uniforms at Super Bowl 59
With the Super Bowl 59 matchup set between the Chiefs and Eagles, the two teams revealed their uniforms for Feb. 9's game in New Orleans. Given that the Eagles are the designated home team, many fans hoped that the Eagles would turn to their amazing Kelly Green throwbacks for the Super Bowl.
But when Jalen Hurts and the Eagles take the field at the Superdome, they will be rocking a familiar look. We have the NFL to blame for that.
When the league walked back on its one-shell rule in 2022, it allowed teams to bring back alternate helmets. And in the Eagles' case, it meant that the Kelly Green throwbacks were back in the rotation. The Eagles wore the Kelly Greens just twice this season -- in Week 9 and Week 17. And for the Super Bowl, they will be going with the traditional midnight green home uniforms.

Though the Eagles did have their pick of uniforms for the game, their options were limited to the regular home or road white uniforms. That's because NFL postseason guidelines prohibit teams from wearing alternate jerseys in the playoffs and Super Bowl.
The same question came up about the Lions' alternate jerseys, and the team provided the specific rule to The Detroit Free Press:
"Optional uniforms (e.g., Alternate, Classic, Color Rush) may not be worn in the postseason. This is inclusive of optional helmets and pants paired with primary jerseys. Postseason uniform designation must include Primary Jersey color (team color or white) and Primary Pant color choices."
The league did make an exception for the Rams in 2019, allowing them to wear their throwback uniforms. But the Rams were already moving to that color scheme full-time for the following season, and the league likely didn't want the mismatched helmet, jersey and pants making an appearance in the Super Bowl.
The Eagles don't have that problem -- even if the Kelly Green set is top tier.
