West Ham vs Man City - LIVE!

Erling Haaland continued his sensational start to the Premier League as he helped himself to another hat-trick in Manchester City’s 3-1 win over West Ham. After netting on the opening day of the season at Stamford Bridge and then following it with three more against Ipswich, Haaland took his tally for the season to six goals inside half an hour at the London Stadium and then seven late on to confirm victory.

That made it three wins from three for City to start the season ahead of the upcoming international break, with the bid for a fifth straight title off to an ominous start. Having already headed over from close range, the City striker opened the scoring when he rolled a finish into the bottom corner, before grabbing his second when hammering past Alphonse Areola. That was to restore the lead, coming after Ruben Dias had turned the ball into his own net to provide West Ham with an equaliser that there had been little indication was coming.

The hosts had the chance to level again shortly after the break, their best moments unsurprisingly coming on the counter. Mohammed Kudus found Jarrod Bowen, who played it back to the Ghanaian and the shot was lashed against the inside of the post. But the match was put to bed with a little under ten minutes remaining when Matheus Nunes played Haaland clean through on goal, the dinked finish almost inevitable to seal victory and yet another match ball.

70 league goals in 69 for Haaland in England now. His seventh goal in three league games this season.

Ludicrous stats. Pretty ludicrous player.

Hat-trick... again!

Clean through on goal, and he just dinks a lovely finish over Fabianski. Too good. Game over.

Dom Smith at the London Stadium

Manchester City patiently plodding towards a third goal at the moment.

West Ham have understandably tired after an age out of possession, and are struggled to keep their pressing intensity up.

West Ham 1-2 Man City

19:08 , Matt Verri

78 mins: Chance. Big chance.

Kudus robs Silva, who get himself into an awful mess.

Ball rolled into the middle, Fullkrug lays it off for Soucek who scuffs his effort well wide.

West Ham 1-2 Man City

19:05 , Matt Verri

75 mins: Side to side to side to side to side. Looooooong spell of Man City possession.

Not doing much with it, but the seconds are ticking away. And it’s clearly boring Rodriguez, who gets booked for a needless trip.

West Ham 1-2 Man City

19:02 , Matt Verri

72 mins: Coufal and Fullkrug on for Emerson and Antonio, while Nunes replaces Grealish.

This match is somehow still up for grabs in the final 20 minutes. West Ham jsut need one moment...

Dom Smith at the London Stadium

18:58 , Matt Verri

Gundogan is on for City and gets a positive reception.

It feels like we've gone back in time about four years.

West Ham 1-2 Man City

18:58 , Matt Verri

68 mins: Doku the man to make way for Gundogan. Not exactly a straight swap.

City corner, De Bruyne clips a lovely ball in and Dias somehow fails to turn it in. Just needed solid contact on the stretch.

West Ham 1-2 Man City

18:56 , Matt Verri

66 mins: Guardiola wants some control and he’s turning to a familiar face.

Gundogan about to come on for the visitors, great option for City to have in their squad again.

West Ham 1-2 Man City

18:53 , Matt Verri

63 mins: Emerson into the book for a late hack on Doku, before Kilman does exactly the same. City winger too quick for the pair of them.

Visitors seem to be trying to slow things down more and more to get control, but they have looked well capable of scoring when pressing forward.

West Ham 1-2 Man City

18:52 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Kudus launches a ball over the top, Antonio and Bowen are both interested but Ederson charges off his line and the diving header clears the danger.

Bowen then has a shot charged down - it is crazy that City are in a fairly nervy position in this match.

West Ham 1-2 Man City

18:49 , Matt Verri

59 mins: Bowen is making things happen.

Drives inside, rolls a pass into the path of Antonio. He swings a foot at it, will settle for a corner. Home fans finding their voice again.

Bowen takes, Ederson punches it out and Rodriguez dribbles an effort wide from about three miles out.

West Ham 1-2 Man City

18:46 , Matt Verri

56 mins: West Ham are getting a couple of encouraging moments on the counter. That’s where their chances are going to come.

Wan-Bissaka drives down the right wing, ball is too deep. Kudus keeps it in, back to Paqueta, who loses it as he tries to Emerson through on goal.

Dom Smith at the London Stadium

18:41 , Matt Verri

That would have been some goal on the break from West Ham. Mohammed Kudus is just infectious to watch.

West Ham 1-2 Man City

18:41 , Matt Verri

52 mins: OFF THE POST!

What a chance for West Ham. It’s a superb break, Kudus finding Bowen and it then comes back to him.

Goes for maximum power, ball is lashes against the woodwork.

West Ham 1-2 Man City

18:38 , Matt Verri

49 mins: De Bruyne with the corner, swung towards the penalty spot.

Takes a bounce, Silva is the man free and the ball hits him more than anything. Header loops over the bar.

West Ham 1-2 Man City

18:37 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Slow start to this half. City keeping it in midfield and at the back, no real press from West Ham.

When they do get up the pitch, City play round them and now Doku is free on the right. Cut back towards De Bruyne, West Ham hack it away.

Back underway!

18:34 , Matt Verri

Here we go again...

Dom Smith at the London Stadium

18:33 , Matt Verri

Lukasz Fabianski on and Alphonse Areola off at the break in goal.

Not sure what's happened there.

Haaland at the double!

18:25 , Matt Verri

Here’s how Erling Haaland restored Man City’s lead.

Two perfect touches, no chance for the goalkeeper.

Dom Smith at the London Stadium

18:22 , Matt Verri

Lopetegui's men certainly in the game at the interval, but Erling Haaland is the reason why they would get nothing from it if the score-line stayed like this.

Two superb finishes have City 2-1 up, but the own-goal made by Bowen and put past his own goalkeeper by Dias show the Hammers' ability to threaten on the break after the interval.

Can they turn it around? Easier said than done...

HT: West Ham 1-2 Man City

18:19 , Matt Verri

There is the half-time whistle.

Man City in front thanks to Erling Haaland’s brace, he’s got six goals in two and a half matches to start the season.

West Ham started well, but only an own goal from Ruben Dias has kept them in it. Second best by a mile.

West Ham 1-2 Man City

18:17 , Matt Verri

45+1 mins: Or not... West Ham suddenly on the attack.

Kudus runs at Lewis, into the box and the left-footed strike whistles just wide of the far post. More like it.

West Ham 1-2 Man City

18:17 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Two minutes added on.

That’s roughly 120 seconds more than West Ham want.

Dom Smith at the London Stadium

18:15 , Matt Verri

Feels as though West Ham really need half-time to arrive now. Get in at 2-1 down and regroup.

Fortunately for them, De Bruyne's free-kick lands on the roof of the net.

West Ham 1-2 Man City

18:15 , Matt Verri

43 mins: Heavy touch from Antonio, sucks De Bruyne in and the City captain is late as he slides into the striker.

Yellow card for De Bruyne. West Ham can take their sweet time over this free-kick, they need half-time. Badly.

West Ham 1-2 Man City

18:13 , Matt Verri

42 mins: All too easy for Man City at the moment. Able to knock it around at walking pace.

Doku injects some pace into proceedings, beating Emerson once and then twice for good measure.

Ball into the box drops for Gvardiol, his volley is charged down.

West Ham 1-2 Man City

18:09 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Big chance, should be 3-1.

Haaland with a lovely lay-off, perfectly into the path of Lewis. Clean through on goal but he lifts the finish over the bar. Had to score.

West Ham 1-2 Man City

18:07 , Matt Verri

35 mins: Wan-Bissaka slides in to knock the ball away from Grealish in the box, wiped out Mavropanos in the process. Just what West Ham need.

Chance for West Ham to break from the corner, Antonio is going to have to go all by himself. Nearly does, but Haaland of all people is back near enough at right back to stop him.

West Ham 1-2 Man City

18:04 , Matt Verri

33 mins: We’re back to City dominating possession, West Ham camped deep in their own half.

Haaland has an hour to make it back-to-back hat-tricks, would almost be a surprise if he doesn’t at this point.

City now just need to make sure they don’t put it into their own net again...

Dom Smith at the London Stadium

18:02 , Matt Verri

A lovely flowing move from City, and an emphatic finish by Haaland, who is having a bit of a party out there right now. Two goals inside half an hour.

Good for Grealish's confidence that his incisive goal made the goal too.

GOAL! West Ham 1-2 Man City | Erling Haaland 30'

18:01 , Matt Verri

Ridiculous!

That’s six goals already this season.

Lewis rolls it to Haaland, one touch to get it out of his feet and a second to slam a finish past Areola.

West Ham 1-1 Man City

18:00 , Matt Verri

29 mins: West Ham haven’t really got Kudus involved so far.

Most of their threat coming through Bowen on the right, Paqueta drifting over to that side too. Kudus quiet.

West Ham 1-1 Man City

17:56 , Matt Verri

25 mins: Dangerous ball in from De Bruyne, headed behind for a corner.

Out-swinger finds Gvardiol, but he can’t get any real pace on the header. Areola comfortably claims.

West Ham 1-1 Man City

17:54 , Matt Verri

23 mins: Much more like it from West Ham, offering a threat again. Emerson bursts into the box but forgets to take the ball with him.

Strange start to this match - three or four big momentum swings in barely 20 minutes.

Dom Smith at the London Stadium

17:51 , Matt Verri

No one in this humongous stadium could claim that was coming, but it came nonetheless.

Nice move by West Ham to escape the City press, and Bowen's cross flies past Ederson off his Dias.

The bubbles are flying now.

GOAL! West Ham 1-1 Man City | Ruben Dias OG 19'

17:50 , Matt Verri

Well then!

Against the run of play doesn’t do it justice.

Bowen into the area, plays it into the middle and the ball bounces off Dias and beyond Ederson. Incredible.

West Ham 0-1 Man City

17:49 , Matt Verri

18 mins: Off the woodwork!

Doku glides into the West Ham box, rolls the ball back into the path of De Bruyne and he sweeps an effort against the post. Inches away.

Grealish fires wide from the rebound.

West Ham 0-1 Man City

17:48 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Hosts have barely had a kick since the goal. Early intensity has disappeared.

Grealish’s first start of the season and he has looked sharp on that left wing. Heavily involved for City already.

West Ham 0-1 Man City

17:44 , Matt Verri

13 mins: West Ham were really impressive for about four minutes at the start of the match, but they look ragged now.

Man City are away again, played into Grealish and only a last-ditch block denies him. Corner.

Taken short, De Bruyne then whips an effort at the near post. Areola just about reacts in time to tip it away!

Dom Smith at the London Stadium

17:43 , Matt Verri

It's a breakdown in communication that sees West Ham concede the first goal of the afternoon, Emerson's pass slightly behind Paqueta and the former City target unable to control as Silva nips in.

The rest is history. Silva to Haaland and, unlike with the earlier header, this time a composed finish for 1-0.

GOAL! West Ham 0-1 Man City | Erling Haaland 10'

17:42 , Matt Verri

Doesn’t miss this one!

Haaland clean through on goal, just rolls the finish into the borrom corner.

Emerson with the poor pass to Paqueta in the build-up, the Brazilian couldn’t sort his feet out and City were away.

West Ham 0-0 Man City

17:40 , Matt Verri

9 mins: De Bruyne has space for the shot from the edge of the box, blocked.

All of a sudden West Ham can’t get out and it’s one-way traffic. Silva in behind again, Mavrapanos swiftly across to concede the corner.

Dom Smith at the London Stadium

17:38 , Matt Verri

The body language of Bernardo Silva said it all there.

He raised his hands as if to ask 'What the hell?' as his dinked cross was somehow headed over the bar by Erling Haaland.

The Norwegian should have scored. Simple.

West Ham 0-0 Man City

17:37 , Matt Verri

6 mins: Man City starting to get themselves into his match. Dominating possession, more of the pattern we were expecting.

Silva gets to the byline, stands up a cross to the back post... Haaland heads over!

That was a big, big chance. Should have scored, six yards out.

Dom Smith at the London Stadium

17:35 , Matt Verri

Intense start from West Ham, who would be ahead but for Gvardiol doing just enough as a deflected Kudus cross arrives at Antonio's feet.

Then Bowen's strike from distance is parried.

No lack of intent from the Hammers early on here.

West Ham 0-0 Man City

17:34 , Matt Verri

3 mins: This is a brilliant start from West Ham. All over City.

Bowen shifts the ball onto his left foot, powerful strike and Ederson can only parry it away. Home fans responding to what they’re seeing.

West Ham 0-0 Man City

17:33 , Matt Verri

2 mins: West Ham straight on the front foot and almost into the lead!

Kudus whips a cross in from the left, takes a deflection and Antonio very nearly has a tap-in at the back post. Doesn’t quite drop for him.

KICK-OFF!

17:31 , Matt Verri

A minute's applause after the recent passing of Sven-Goran Eriksson.

He is recognised on the tannoy as being a "true football legend."

Here we go...

17:28 , Matt Verri

Teams are out onto the pitch

Bowen, Kudus, Antonio... plenty of pace for the Hammers to trouble City with on the break.

Will have to be at their clinical best.

New man unveiled at London Stadium

17:25

Carlos Soler has just been presented to West Ham fans on the pitch at the London Stadium.

He wasn’t signed in time to feature this evening, but will be available after the international break.

Busy summer for the Hammers, they look to have strengthened really well. We’ll see in the coming months whether that plays out on the pitch.

Pre-match thoughts from Pep Guardiola

17:15 , Matt Verri

“He doesn’t feel good,” the City boss says of Savinho’s absence.

“Has some some problem with the knee. Hopefully with ten days off, he can recover well for after the international break.”

Lopetegui fires Haaland warning

17:05 , Matt Verri

Two games, one hat-trick, four goals.

It’s been a typically brilliant start to the season for Erling Haaland, who has looked incredibly sharp.

However, speaking at his pre-match press conference, Julen Lopetegui insisted West Ham cannot just focus on City’s striker.

"It's not only about stopping Haaland, but the City team - they are one of the best teams in the history of football,” the West Ham boss said.

In the 3pms...

16:57 , Matt Verri

Chaos at Goodison Park!

Everton were two goals up after 86 minutes... they’ve lost 3-2 to Bournemouth. Madness.

Elsewhere, Brentford have cruised to a 3-1 win over Southampton, while it was 1-1 between Ipswich and Brentford.

Aston Villa have beaten Leicester 2-1, and it finished 1-1 between Nottingham Forest and Wolves.

Can Jack Grealish kick season into gear?

16:45 , Matt Verri

Feels a pretty important evening for Jack Grealish, says Dom Smith.

“Fresh from the boost of being selected in Lee Carsley's first England squad on Thursday when so many big names weren't, he makes his first start of the season.

“The emergence of Savinho, who is out with a knee injury today, has seen Grealish's impressive pre-season performances reduced to history. Chance to get going today, though.”

Man City dominate head-to-head

16:34 , Matt Verri

Over the last two season, the head-to-head record between these sides is 11-2 in Man City’s favour.

They have not lost to West Ham in the Premier League since 2015 - everything points to another routine evening for City.

Just as well it’s not being played on paper then...

Changes from both managers

16:25 , Matt Verri

Wan-Bissaka and Alvarez both start for West Ham, with Fullkrug and Soucek among those named on a strong-looking bench.

As for Man City, Grealish makes his first start of the season, while Lewis keeps his place in defence. Rodri, Stones, Walker and Gundogan all among the substitutes.

Guardiola: City have taken a risk

16:08 , Matt Verri

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola admitted the club have taken a risk by not moving to replace Julian Alvarez in the transfer market but insisted he has more than enough options in attack.

After Alvarez left for Atletico Madrid in a deal potentially worth £81million, City were linked with several forwards who might play understudy to Erling Haaland, but chose to stick with what they had in line with Guardiola's preference for working with a small squad.

"I'm happy with the squad," Guardiola said. "We didn't expect Julian was leaving, although he had conversations a long time ago with other clubs and his agent, so it could happen and in the end it happened.

"We saw what we have, if we have many, many injuries it will be a problem, but in a few months Oscar Bobb will be back (from injury) and Phil (Foden) is in that position, McAtee can play in that position, Gundogan can play in that position, Bernardo...

"They are different players to Erling of course. Maybe it is a mistake, I don't know but I don't like leaving players without playing for a long time. When everyone is involved with a chance to play the performance of the teams is always better.”

Soler to be presented ahead of kick-off

15:57 , Matt Verri

West Ham confirmed the loan signing of Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Carlos Soler yesterday, and he will be presented to fans on the pitch at 5:15pm ahead of kick-off.

The 27-year-old became the ninth signing the Hammers have made this summer in a significant overhaul under new head coach, Julen Lopetegui. James Ward-Prowse, meanwhile, joined Nottingham Forest on loan.

A product of Valencia’s youth academy, Soler joined PSG from his boyhood club in 2022 and has since won two Ligue 1 titles in the French capital, alongside a raft of domestic cup trophies.

“I am really excited to be here as a West Ham player,” said Soler.

“It has always been a dream of mine to play in the Premier League, and to be doing it in London with a Club like West Ham is an incredible feeling.

“I can’t wait to feel the support of the fans, who I have already heard so much about from conversations with people who know the Club, like my good friend Pablo Fornals.”

Standard Sport prediction

15:44 , Matt Verri

It’s so difficult to look past City, who have swept away all before them for almost the entirety of the calendar year.

West Ham look well-placed for a strong season, but it would be a big shock if this proved to be a successful evening for them.

Man City to win 3-1.

Man City team news

15:36 , Matt Verri

Manchester City could hand a second full debut to Ilkay Gundogan for today’s Premier League trip to West Ham.

Having completed a surprise return from Barcelona after only one season away, the 33-year-old midfielder played just over 20 minutes off the bench in his second City bow as newly-promoted Ipswich were thumped 4-1 last weekend and could get the nod from the off on Saturday evening.

Phil Foden is set to miss out again after being ruled out of the Ipswich drubbing through illness.

Jack Grealish, back in the England squad this week, will be pushing to be included after missing the starting XI for the first two games of the season, with Savinho and Jeremy Doku involved.

Midfielders Rodri and Mateo Kovacic are both now back in training after injury, but Oscar Bobb is not expected to return before December after having surgery on a fractured leg.

West Ham team news

West Ham look set to make changes to their starting lineup for today’s tough test.

New boss Julen Lopetegui has confirmed that Aaron Cresswell suffered a hamstring injury in midweek and the defender is duly expected to miss out this evening.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka could get the nod at right-back, although Konstantinos Mavropanos looks likely to start alongside Max Kilman in place of Jean-Clair Todibo.

Key midfielder Edson Alvarez may be eased back into proceedings as he builds up his fitness following a hamstring injury suffered at the Copa America with Mexico.

Spanish midfielder Carlos Soler, a deadline day loan signing from Paris Saint-Germain, did not join in time to be registered for the weekend.

Predicted West Ham XI: Areola; Wan-Bissaka, Mavropanos, Kilman, Emerson; Alvarez, Soucek; Bowen, Paqueta, Kudus; Antonio
