West Ham vs Arsenal LIVE!

Arsenal’s recent resurgence continued with a thumping win over West Ham in the Premier League. The Gunners made it three consecutive wins and 13 goals in a single week as they brushed aside their London rivals 5-2 on Saturday evening, with all seven goals scored in a chaotic first half. It is the first time that has happened in the top-flight since 2012 and only the fourth time ever in the Premier League era.

Gabriel got the scoring started after just 10 minutes at the London Stadium by heading home from another well-worked Arsenal set-piece that left Julen Lopetegui fuming. Leandro Trossard tapped home to make it 2-0, while Martin Odegaard’s penalty after Lucas Paqueta’s foul on Bukayo Saka piled more misery on West Ham before Kai Havertz netted after Trossard’s fine pass.

Arsenal were absolutely dominant but West Ham then threatened a comeback from 4-0 down, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Emerson both notching before their comeback attempts were halted on the stroke of half-time when Saka’s penalty followed a foul by Lukasz Fabianski on Gabriel, who then went off injured. Follow West Ham vs Arsenal reaction live below!

West Ham 2-5 Arsenal

Standard Sport’s Simon Collings at the London Stadium

Seven goals in the first half, and then none after the break. Sums up how much of an odd game this was.

Odegaard and Saka - again - brilliant, but Trossard looking much better, too.

Arsenal up to second and with five different goalscorers for the second game running.

West Ham 2-5 Arsenal

Saturday 30 November 2024 19:33

Full-time

After an incredible seven-goal first half, the second of course ends goalless.

In the end it’s a London derby rout and Arsenal move up to second place and six points off top spot before leaders Liverpool host crisis-stricken Manchester City at Anfield tomorrow.

Plenty of positives on display for the resurgent Gunners once again, but Mikel Arteta will also be concerned by the defensive vulnerabilities they showed after going 4-0 up and potentially a number of new injury worries.

West Ham stay down in 14th after a sixth top-flight defeat of the season that halts their mini-resurgence after the win at Newcastle.

They showed good fight with those two quick-fire goals after it looked likely to be a cricket score, but major problems obviously remain for Julen Lopetegui.

Standard Sport’s Simon Collings at the London Stadium

West Ham taking off Summerville for Alvarez at 5-2 down, tells you all about how Lopetegui feels right now.

Calafiori has a quick word with Mikel Arteta when he comes off - and physio Simon Murphy.

Taken his seat on the bench, though, and not gone for any treatment - which is positive.

Looks like West Ham have gone to a diamond in midfield, while it will be interesting to see if there is any rejig in Arsenal’s defence.

Kiwior, Calafiori and Timber are all very versatile and can each play at either full-back or in the centre.

Underway in the second half at the London Stadium - surely, surely it will prove less dramatic than the first!

A substitution apiece at the break, Gabriel replaced by Jakub Kiwior for Arsenal and West Ham sending on Edson Alvarez for Crysencio Summerville.

Mad.

West Ham 2-5 Arsenal

Saturday 30 November 2024 18:32

According to the fine folks at Opta, this is only the fourth time that there have been seven goals in one half in a Premier League match.

It’s the first time since December 2012, when it was Reading 3-4 Manchester United at the break in a crazy game at the Madejski Stadium.

Worth noting that was the final scoreline in that game...

Half-time

One of the craziest halves of football I can remember.

Arsenal absolutely cruising leading 4-0 after 36 minutes, before West Ham hit back through Wan-Bissaka and Emerson.

Then Saka’s penalty - Arsenal’s second of the day - gives them a three-goal lead at the break.

Is seven goals a record in a single Premier League half? It can’t be far off, surely...

Saturday 30 November 2024 18:09 , George Flood

Saturday 30 November 2024 18:06 , George Flood

GOAL! West Ham 0-2 Arsenal | Leandro Trossard 27'

Saturday 30 November 2024 17:57 , George Flood

27 mins: A fine team goal and the Gunners double their lead!

Saka finds Odegaard and the captain returns the favour with an absolute peach of a pass before Saka lays the ball on a plate for Trossard to tap home from close range.

West Ham are in huge trouble here. Arsenal purring.

West Ham 0-1 Arsenal

Saturday 30 November 2024 17:56 , George Flood

25 mins: Timber gets up at the front post this time from the corner and Fabianski makes a quick reaction save.

That could easily have been 2-0. Another effort is blocked before West Ham clear upfield, straight to Arsenal again.

The Hammers have to get a foot on the ball at some stage here, or it’s going to be a very long evening indeed.

They just can’t get out.

West Ham 0-1 Arsenal

Saturday 30 November 2024 17:55 , George Flood

24 mins: West Ham are just asking for more trouble by continually conceding so many corners - five so far.

Trossard - who had a knock earlier but seems okay - goes to the ground after a wrestling match with Soler.

Nothing given and it’s another corner.

West Ham 0-1 Arsenal

Saturday 30 November 2024 17:53 , George Flood

Saturday 30 November 2024 17:48 , George Flood

16 mins: GOOOAAA.. NO!

A rogue Calafiori pass has Arsenal in all sorts of bother and Bowen sets away Summerville, who finishes with a lovely lofted finish over Raya.

But the offside flag is raised. It won’t count.

Superb finish though.

West Ham 0-1 Arsenal

Saturday 30 November 2024 17:45

13 mins: West Ham are really struggling here as confident Arsenal work another early corner.

No out ball at all for the Hammers so far and their opponents are totally dominating possession and territory.

A second goal doesn’t feel too far away as things stand...

West Ham 0-1 Arsenal

Saturday 30 November 2024 17:44 , George Flood

Standard Sport’s Simon Collings at the London Stadium

Arsenal have had two corners so far. On both occasions, the takers - Rice and Saka - have chatted to Gabriel before.

Presumably: "Where do you want it, big man?" Saka delivers, but criminal of West Ham to let Gabriel be unmarked like that.

He’s certainly committed to the bit if so!

GOAL! West Ham 0-1 Arsenal | Gabriel 10'

Saturday 30 November 2024 17:40 , George Flood

10 mins: Another early goal for Arsenal!

Again it’s Gabriel who dominates inside the box after another corner earned following determined work from Saka and Timber.

He dictates the set-piece move and manages to lose his marker in the shuffle before steering a header in at the near post.

Perfect start for the Gunners once more.

West Ham 0-0 Arsenal

Saturday 30 November 2024 17:37 , George Flood

6 mins: Plenty of probing from Arsenal now down both flanks, Odegaard showing a nice flick as he links up with Timber on the right.

The Gunners’ first corner comes after Calafiori’s driven cross from the left is blocked behind by Wan-Bissaka.

Rice’s corner is repelled, but here come Arsenal again as they dominate possession early on at the London Stadium.

West Ham 0-0 Arsenal

Saturday 30 November 2024 17:36 , George Flood

4 mins: The boos for Rice get louder as he tries to pick a way through this West Ham midfield.

Saka looks to make inroads down Arsenal’s productive right flank, but he’s well-marshalled by a combination of Summerville and Paqueta and ends up fouling the latter.

West Ham 0-0 Arsenal

Saturday 30 November 2024 17:33 , George Flood

2 mins: A smattering of boos for Rice on his latest return to the London Stadium.

Lopetegui snubs Liverpool to name Arsenal as Premier League's best

Saturday 30 November 2024 17:06 , George Flood

West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui certainly ruffled some feathers this week by naming Arsenal as the best team in the Premier League, snubbing Liverpool in the process despite their dominant eight-point lead at the Premier League summit and midweek Champions League win over Real Madrid showing their prowess at the start of the Arne Slot era.

“The most important thing is the players on the pitch being ready to compete against,” said Lopetegui.

“In my opinion, for sure [Arsenal are] the best team in the Premier League and one of the best teams around the world.

“He [Mikel Arteta] is doing fantastic as a coach and managing in a fantastic way at Arsenal, putting his ideas and you can see very well how he did and the kind of coach he is. We need to be ready.”

Arsenal see midfield depth take hit as injuries arise again

Saturday 30 November 2024 16:58

Standard Sport’s Simon Collings is in position at the London Stadium and offers his pre-match thoughts with Arsenal’s depth once again taking a hit with Thomas Partey and Mikel Merino now joining Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu on the sidelines.

The Gunners’ upturn in fortunes this week has come against the backdrop of an improving injury situation, White surgery aside, so Mikel Arteta will be hoping those are not serious problems to leave him notably short on depth in midfield.

Arsenal without Partey and Merino due to injury

Confirmation from Arsenal on social media as to why midfield duo Thomas Partey and Mikel Merino are not involved this evening.

Are we likely to see an expanded role for fan favourite Ethan Nwaneri off the bench?

West Ham unchanged from Newcastle win

Saturday 30 November 2024 16:41

West Ham are unsurprisingly unchanged from their win at Newcastle, with Jean-Clair Todibo passed fit to start in defence.

The only alterations come on the bench, where Edson Alvarez and teenage defender Ezra Mayers replace Aaron Cresswell and Konstantinos Mavropanos.

Jorginho and Trossard start for Arsenal

Saturday 30 November 2024 16:35 , George Flood

So Arsenal show two changes from the side that thrashed Sporting CP in Lisbon, with Thomas Partey missing out with a muscle injury and replaced in midfield by Jorginho.

Gabriel Martinelli drops to the bench again as Leandro Trossard starts, as he and Jorginho both did against Nottingham Forest last weekend.

There is no Mikel Merino, who also started against Forest but has a knee problem. Gabriel is fit to start alongside William Saliba at centre-back as usual.

Declan Rice and Kai Havertz are back in the Premier League team, while there are places on the bench for the fit-again Kieran Tierney and young defender Josh Nichols.

Lopetegui confident touchline ban won't affect West Ham

Saturday 30 November 2024 16:14 , George Flood

Julen Lopetegui will not be in the dugout for West Ham this evening as he serves an automatic one-match touchline ban after collecting his third yellow card of the season in Monday night’s crucial 2-0 win at Newcastle that may have gone a long way to saving his job, with some reports suggesting that both that game and tonight’s visit of Arsenal to the London Stadium were “make or break” in terms of his Hammers future after a hugely disappointing start to his tenure.

Assistant head coach Pablo Sanz will presumably take the lead for West Ham today, with Lopetegui confident that his absence won’t play a major role.

“It is about the players on the pitch and on the bench, who are ready to help the team to be able to compete against the best team in the Premier League, in my opinion,” he said.

Will Arteta be watching Liverpool vs Man City?

Saturday 30 November 2024 15:51 , George Flood

Will Mikel Arteta be watching title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City go head to head in Sunday’s blockbuster on Merseyside?

“100 per cent,” he said. “It’s a big match, a beautiful match to watch.

“Two of the best teams in Europe facing each other. So it’s a big one.”

Asked who he wanted to win, Arteta cheekily responded: “Yeah, Arsenal tomorrow. That’s the preference. We will see.

“It’s something that we cannot control.”

Arteta admits Arsenal need to be near-perfect to catch Liverpool

Saturday 30 November 2024 15:46 , George Flood

There’s a sense that Arsenal have really turned a corner over the last week, having gone four games in the Premier League without a win before brushing aside Nottingham Forest 3-0 straight after the international break and then absolutely dismantling one of Europe’s most in-form teams in their own backyard in Sporting CP.

They would go from fifth up to second and six points behind early runaway leaders Liverpool with a third straight victory across all competitions this evening, before the Reds host crisis-stricken defending champions Manchester City at Anfield tomorrow.

Mikel Arteta was asked yesterday if he thinks the margin for error for Arsenal has now disappeared and that his side would now have to be pretty much perfect to hunt down Arne Slot’s Liverpool, who look superb after beating Real Madrid in midweek.

“If they continue that way, that’s for sure,” he said.

“The results they are producing, the amount of games they are winning. But the focus is just on us.

“If we keep winning games, maintaining the consistency in terms of performances that’s going to give us a better chance of winning.

“Keep the availability because this is a long run.”

West Ham dealing with 'two or three' new injury worries

Saturday 30 November 2024 15:33 , George Flood

It’s a similar story on the fitness front for West Ham, with manager Julen Lopetegui confirming on Thursday that there were "two or three little problems" with unnamed players that would need to be assessed again on Friday.

"I'm positive that all of them can be ready, but let's see,” he said.

Mohammed Kudus remains banned as mentioned, while striker Niclas Fullkrug still isn’t ready to return from a persistent Achilles injury.

Like Arsenal’s Gabriel, Jean-Clair Todibo will need a late fitness test after a knock suffered in Monday night’s 2-0 win at Newcastle.

If he cannot play, then ex-Arsenal man Konstantinos Mavropanos will fill in alongside Max Kilman at centre-back instead.

Edson Alvarez’s recent suspension caused a lot of confusion between West Ham and the Premier League it seemed, but he was absent at St James’ Park in the end and is available to feature this evening.

Arteta coy on Gabriel fitness amid new Arsenal injury worries

Saturday 30 November 2024 15:15 , George Flood

The fitness of Gabriel will be a key talking point for Arsenal ahead of today’s London derby.

The Brazilian was part of a superb team performance in Lisbon on Tuesday and scored the third goal with an emphatic close-range header from a corner on the stroke of half-time, afterwards mimicking the goal celebration of Viktor Gyokeres, yet he felt discomfort in the latter stages and asked to come off - forcing Mikel Arteta to abandon plans to send on Raheem Sterling instead.

Jakub Kiwior deputised off the bench for Gabriel and would presumably do so again at the London Stadium if the latter is not fit, particularly with no Ben White or Takehiro Tomiyasu still, though full-backs Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori are both versatile defenders who can also play in the centre.

Asked for an update on Gabriel’s fitness at Friday’s pre-West Ham press conference, Arteta said: “Wait and see. I can’t [give you an update], not because I don’t want to.”

Just as concerningly for Arsenal perhaps, Arteta also confirmed that a few unnamed Arsenal stars had been unable to train after the thumping Champions League win over Sporting CP.

“Not a lot because we have another training session, we have to see how the boys are today,” he said of the rest of Arsenal’s team news.

“A few weren’t able to train yesterday [Thursday] but hopefully today so we have to wait and see.”

Lopetegui is banned from the touchline after picking up his third booking of the season on Tyneside.

Edson Alvarez is available again after his recent suspension, although Mohammed Kudus will serve the last of his five-match ban. Niclas Fullkrug, meanwhile, remains a doubt as he recovers from the Achilles injury that has ruled him out since September. The Hammers are hopeful Jean-Clair Todibo will be fit after picking up a knock at Newcastle.
