Valentine Holmes makes first big impact in the NFL

Former NRL player Valentine Holmes has made his first impact in the NFL for the Jets after numerous runs in the fourth quarter in the game against the Giants.

Holmes came on in the fourth quarter in the pre-season game and started off with two short runs.

But the former State of Origin winger stepped it up a few moments later after a 14-yard reception, but was crunched in his first big-time hit on the tackle.

He then received an 11-yard catch giving him the opportunity to show off his footwork as he stepped two opponents.

After a short break, Holmes returned to the field for a five-yard gain to help lead the Jets to a touchdown.

Holmes finished with three carries for six yards, but impressed with three catches for 30 yards.

This was Holmes’ first hit-out in front a stadium for the New York Jets.

He will hope to make the roster as a running back, wide receiver and return specialist.

Holmes is part of the NFL's International Player Pathway program.

This summer, all four AFC East teams - the Jets, Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots - can carry an international player in camp.

It's a long shot, but players can earn a place on the 53-man active roster.

If they don't, they are eligible for a practice squad exemption, meaning they wouldn't count against the team's allotment of 10 non-active roster players during the regular season.
