Cori Gauff stuns tennis world again with 'insane' US Open comeback

Cori Gauff has stunned the tennis world again, storming back from a set down to claim a remarkable win at the US Open.

In her very first match at Flushing Meadows, Gauff dropped the opening set to 18-year-old Russian Anastasia Potapova.

But showing maturity way beyond her 15 years, Gauff came right back to win the match 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

The American fell behind 3-0 to start the match, then was broken to begin the second set and third before turning things around at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

NOT AGAIN: Serena Williams' coach at centre of fresh US Open controversy

She is the youngest woman to win a match at the US Open since 2014.

The players' combined age of 33 made it the youngest matchup of the first round at Flushing Meadows.

Fans and commentators went berserk.

Gauff continues fairytale

Gauff shocked the tennis world at Wimbledon in July when she beat Venus Williams in a fairytale run to the fourth round.

She was granted a wildcard to play at the US Open.

“I was trying to calm myself down,” Gauff said in her post-match interview.

“I was almost out.”

That she was.

But similar to the way she saved match points in a Centre Court match at the All England Club during her captivating run there, Gauff did not give in or give up.

All along the way, her mother and father were clapping and yelling, celebrating nearly every point their daughter claimed.

“I think I gave them a heart attack, especially my mum,” Gauff said.

“And my dad, he looks a little bit tired over there, too.”

Gauff will face Hungarian Timea Babos in the second round before a potential meeting with World No.1 and defending champion Naomi Osaka.
