France draw with the Netherlands in Euro 2024

Wasteful France have played to the first goalless draw at Euro 2024 in the absence of captain Kylian Mbappe against the Netherlands.

The teams had also met in qualifying, with France winning 4-0 and 2-1 and four of the six goals coming from Mbappe.

He was an unused substitute after breaking his nose in the first match against Austria, and could only watch on as Adrien Rabiot inexplicably passed to Antoine Griezmann instead of shooting himself.

Griezmann then narrowly aimed wide, with Marcus Thuram and Ousmane Dembele also missing the target.

The French remain without a goal of their own after two matches as the win over Austria came from an own goal by Maximilian Wöber.

The Dutch had an early chance with Jeremie Frimpong finding the net against the run of play in the 69th in his RB Leipzig home stadium, but the goal was nullified after a lengthy review because Denzel Dumfries was ruled in an offside position as he interfered with goalkeeper Mike Maignon.

The Dutch and France have four points each to lead from Austria, who are on three after beating bottom side Poland 3-1. The final matches on Tuesday sees Netherlands take on Austria and France up against Poland.

Earlier, Roman Yaremchuk's special finish re-invigorated Ukraine's campaign as they came from behind to beat Slovakia 2-1 and give their last-16 hopes a major boost.

The team from the war-ravaged nation did remarkably well to even reach the finals and a determined response to falling behind to Ivan Schranz's header on Friday was rewarded with Mykola Shaparenko's equaliser early in the second half.

Yaremchuk then expertly controlled a ball dropping over his head and prodded home the winner 10 minutes from time.

Francesco Calzona's Slovakia would have been through to the knock-out stages with a second win after the shock opening victory over Belgium, but a second last-16 Euro qualification as an independent country after 2016 is now in the balance.

Romania face bottom side Belgium in their second group E game on Saturday and also have three points, like Ukraine and Slovakia.

Schranz netted the opener with a clever downward header at the far post on 17 minutes after Slovakia had made by far the brighter start.

Ukraine goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin, who replaced Real Madrid's Andriy Lunin after his errors in the first 3-0 loss to Romania, had been forced into two early saves from Schranz and Lukas Haraslín.

More German rain - a feature of recent matches - fell on Dusseldorf but Ukraine got a foothold, with Mykhailo Mudryk going close and Oleksandr Tymchyk hitting the post.

Ukraine then deservedly levelled on 54 minutes, Shaparenko finishing off a fine team move, which started on the edge of Ukraine's box.

Both sides then tired before Yaremchuk struck.

Later in Berlin, Austria picked up a crucial win, defeating Poland 3-1 to leave the Robert Lewandowski-powered side on the brink of elimination.

Gernot Trauner, Christoph Baumgartner and Marko Arnautovic scored for an impressive Austrian outfot, while Krzysztof Piatek had put Poland level at 1-1 in the first half.

To avoid a group stage exit, Poland were left needing the Netherlands to beat France in a later group D match on Friday.

Lewandowski, who missed Poland's first match against the Netherlands due to an injury, came on in the second half but failed to make an impact, and was booked after just five minutes on the pitch.
