Two-time NBL champion Angus Glover joins Phoenix

South East Melbourne's new-look roster is gradually taking shape with the addition of two-time NBL championship winner Angus Glover alongside fellow boom recruit Nathan Sobey.

Glover has signed a two-year deal with the Phoenix after winning consecutive titles in 2022-23 during a four-season stint with the Sydney Kings.

"Angus brings a multitude of skills on both sides of the ball, toughness and championship-winning experience," Phoenix basketball manager Simon Mitchell said.

"We look forward to Angus joining the team and getting to work with (head coach) Mike Kelly and the rest of the squad."

Sobey officially joined South East Melbourne when the free agency window opened on Monday, following a messy exit from Brisbane after they missed the finals last season.

Bullets coach Justin Schueller said in a radio interview this month he needed to bring in winners who would lean into the club's culture.

Sobey fired back, claiming he had been thrown under the bus by Schueller and his "pretty average" comments.

The 10-year NBL veteran is now hell-bent on chasing championship success with the Phoenix.

Sobey and Glover have joined contracted players Mitch Creek, Matt Kenyon, Ben Ayre and Owen Foxwell on the club's roster for next season.

"It's been a long way away for the last few years, but I think what we have and what we're going to be putting together as a team is going to be exciting," Sobey said.

"It will give us the best chance to put our best foot forward and give it a red-hot crack."

Meanwhile, NBL champions Tasmania JackJumpers have decided not to renew the contract of American import Marcus Lee.

The centre played 34 games in season 2023/24, starting in 32 and finishing with the second most blocks for the franchise and third for rebounds.

There is speculation the JackJumpers, who claimed their first championship in an epic 3-2 series win over Melbourne United, will sign South East Melbourne big man Gorjok Gak.

Lee's departure comes a day after Tasmania announced it would part ways with foundation player Jarred Bairstow.

The 31-year-old played 66 games for the club after stints with Perth and Brisbane.

Tasmania have signed most of their roster for next season, with Clint Steindl, Anthony Drmic, Jack McVeigh, Fabijan Krslovic, Majok Deng, Milton Doyle, Sean Macdonald, Walter Brown and Will Magnay all committed.
