Transfer news LIVE: Arsenal agree Zubimendi deal, Liverpool in wonderkid talks, Chelsea want new striker
Clubs across the continent are in the market for January transfer deals as they look to strengthen their squads for the second half of the 2024/25 season with titles, European football and survival all on the line.
Arsenal are rumoured to be looking for new forwards after cup defeats to Manchester United and Newcastle. Mikel Arteta’s side have been linked with a goalscorer and have reportedly turned their sights on Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic and Martin Zubimendi.
The window could see some big exits confirmed with Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold open to negotiate a possible free transfer to Real Madrid and Manchester United looking to sell Marcus Rashford. Kyle Walker could be on his way out of Manchester City, though, after informing Pep Guardiola of a desire to explore options away from the club and Milan and Inter are battling for the right back.
Elsewhere, Chelsea have opened talks with Bayern Munich winger Mathys Tel, in a move that could see striker Christopher Nkunku head the other way and return to the Bundesliga after a difficult time at Stamford Bridge and Liverpool have ‘started talks’ with FC Nurnberg star Stefanos Tzimas after rejecting a £70m verbal offer for Darwin Nunez.

Gabriel Jesus to undergo surgery for ACL injury
17:33 , Mike Jones
Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus has had scans over an injury he collected in Sunday’s FA Cup defeat to Manchester United and it has been confirmed that he has suffered an ACL in his left-knee.
The Brazilian is due to undergo surgery in the next few days and will then start a programme of recovery and rehabilitation.
Arsenal released a statement saying: “Further to being substituted with an injury during our match with Manchester United on Sunday, Gabriel Jesus has received extensive assessments, scans and specialist reviews which have confirmed that he has sustained an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
“Gabby will undergo surgery in the coming days and will soon begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme.
“We will continue to keep everyone updated with Gabby’s recovery, with everyone at the club fully focused on supporting Gabby to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible.”
Arsenal make contact with Man Utd over Rashford transfer?
17:30 , Mike Jones
The Sun are reporting that Arsenal have made contact with Manchester United over a shock move for Marcus Rashford.
They say Italian journalist, Massimo Marianella, told a media outlet that there has been a phone call between the clubs. He reportedly said: “It seems that Arsenal have made a phone call to Manchester United for Rashford. The club has valued him at £25m.”
Rashford has been rumoured to be leaving Old Trafford in this window with his team holding talks with AC Milan about a possible loan move.
Plenty of European clubs are interested in his services and despite this rumour it seems Arsenal’s interest in the winger is lukewarm at best.
Aston Villa confirm signing of Donyell Malen
17:17 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of Dutch forward Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund as they bolster Unai Emery’s options.
Villa are, of course, fighting on a number of fronts as they balance domestic action with their Champions League campaign, and the talented Malen will get his chance to push for minutes having fallen out of favour in Germany.

Chelsea learn Marc Guehi asking price
17:15 , Mike Jones
Marc Guehi is one of the more sought-after names this transfer window and the defender has now had his asking price set by Crystal Palace.
Guehi’s former club Chelsea are leading the charge to re-sign him amid a defensive injury crisis and have been told they will have to stump up £70m to make it happen.
Newcastle wanted the centre-back last summer and Palace turned down multiple bids, up to £60m, for him. They are set to stand firm on £70m, which Chelsea are currently unwilling to pay.
Jorginho to Palmeiras?
17:00 , Mike Jones
ESPN say that Arsenal midfielder Jorginho has been offered to Brazilian side Palmeiras.
The club have reportedly met with the player’s agent to negotiate but there is no offer or proposal at this stage. Jorginho’s contract expires in the summer and the club hold an option to extend his stay for an additional year if they so chose.
Araujo’s Juventus switch on hold
16:45 , Sam Turner
Barcelona may decide against selling defender Ronald Araujo with Inigo Martinez set for a month on the sidelines through injury.
Araujo made his first appearance of the season in Barcelona’s 4-0 Copa del Rey win over Barbastro this month after a serious hamstring injury, and came off the bench to replace Martinez in Sunday’s Super Cup victory against Real Madrid.
Martinez suffered a hamstring injury and is expected to be out for around four weeks, and while Araujo has been linked with a move to Juventus, this latest absence could see the 25-year-old remain at Barcelona.
“He is a Barcelona player and nothing changes. We are not happy with the injury of Inigo, who is a leader,” manager Hansi Flick said on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday’s Copa del Rey home clash with Real Betis.
“But we already saw Araujo against Madrid, he is a fantastic centre-back, strong, one of the best and a leader.”
Wolves poised to make Strand Larsen deal permanent
16:30 , Sam Turner
Jorgen Strand Larsen is on the verge of moving to the Premier League permanently.
Signed in the summer on loan from Celta Vigo, the 24-year-old has impressed up front for the Molinuex outfit and his recent appearance against Bristol City in the FA Cup win on Saturday meant he has now passed the threshold of appearances needed to make his move to the Midlands permanent.
It cost Wolves £2.5million to bring in Strand Larsen on loan and reports suggest they would need to shell out another £23million to sign the 6ft4in frontman on a longer-term basis.
Aston Villa are in ‘advanced talks’ for teenage Caen attacker Tidiam Gomis.
16:15 , Sam Turner
The 18-year-old is out of contract in the summer leaving him to freely discuss moves abroad and Villa instigated negotiations with the Ligue 2 outfit last week, according to L’Equipe.
The forward has scored twice and provided two assists in his 19 appearances this term and The Athletic have reported that his potential move to Villa Park is now at an ‘advanced’ stage.
Manchester City set to bolster defensive options as deal agreed for Brazilian teenager
16:00 , Mike Jones
Manchester City are closing in on the signing of Vitor Reis after agreeing a £29.4m fee for the Brazilian defender.
The 18-year-old could form part of a January defensive revamp of City’s squad, with City also hoping to sign Uzbekistan international Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens.
The 20-year-old Khusanov is likely to cost around £33m, with City set to spend more than £60m bringing in two young defenders.

Sheringham blasts want-away Rashford
15:45 , Sam Turner
Teddy Sheringham believes Marcus Rashford’s days at Manchester United are “numbered” and has slammed the England international for failing to “understand the privilege” of playing for the Reds.
United boss Ruben Amorim will not stand in the 27-year-old’s way if a suitable club can be found, and former club legend Sheringham has suggested his manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, may have taken a more direct approach during the January transfer window.
“Fergie would’ve booted him out the door by now,” Sheringham told OLBG.
“A Manchester boy should understand the privilege it is to play for Manchester United. Every player in the world growing up still wants to play for Manchester United and he’s saying now that he wants a new challenge somewhere. I don’t understand it!”
Tottenham given huge injury boost ahead of North London derby
15:29 , Mike Jones
Tottenham have been given a huge injury boost with Richarlison set to be available for Wednesday’s north London derby at Arsenal.
Richarlison has not played since he sustained a muscle injury during a 4-1 win over Aston Villa in November.
That was just Richarlison’s seventh appearance of the campaign due to a long-standing calf issue, which hampered the Brazilian striker earlier in the season, but Postecoglou will have him back for the trip to the Emirates.
Timo Werner will miss out with a hamstring injury though.
Flamengo keen on Jorginho deal
15:15 , Sam Turner
Arsenal midfielder Jorginho is wanted by Flamengo, with the Brazilian giants striving to get the deal done this month.
The 33-year-old is out of contract in June and, with his representatives and Arsenal yet to agree terms for an extension, he has been free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with any club abroad.
Flamengo are reported to be one of the chief pursuers for Jorginho’s services according to Brazilian news outlet Globo Esporte with the Serie A outfit believed to have offered him a three-year deal.

15:00 , Mike Jones
We’re halfway through the 2024-25 Premier League season and the storylines are developing nicely at the top and bottom of the table. Although, depending on your perspective, or your team, they may not all be positive ones.
What is certain is that a handful of clubs will be hoping to improve their fortunes and their squads in January by delving into the market – and some might need to fare rather better in winter than they appear to have done in the summer with regards to transfers.
Here are the best and worst signings of the season so far, as picked by The Independent’s sports desk.

‘January is a difficult month’ says Postecoglou
14:47 , Mike Jones
Ange Postecoglou spoke about bringing new players to Spurs during this window and explained: “It is hard to say, January is a difficult month, there is no real certainty about anything, there are a lot of things that need to come together.
“The club is working really hard in that area and if there are any developments, we will let everyone know.
“We can’t afford to let players go. There could be some young ones, like Alfie Dorrington has gone out on loan and young Will [Lankshear] could be as well.
“But aside from that, we are looking at incomings if anything happens.”
No approaches for Zinchenko
14:33 , Mike Jones
Sky Sports reports that Arsenal have yet to receive a formal offer for defender Oleksandr Zinchenko.
The defender is into the final 18 months of his contract and Arsenal are willing to sell if they receive a suitable offer that lines up with the aims of the club.
However, with injuries a big problem at the minute the Gunners will not allow players to leave this month if it leaves the squad short.

Premier League clubs avoid PSR charges for 2023/24 but one team still at risk
14:02 , Mike Jones
All 20 Premier League sides have avoided charges relating to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) for the 2023/24 season after the league deemed every club to have been financially compliant.
PSR stipulates that clubs cannot post losses of more than £105m over a three-year period, with most clubs required to submit their accounts for the 2023/24 season by 31 December.
This year, the Premier League has adjudged that all clubs have adhered to the rules – in 2024, the league charged both Everton and Nottingham Forest with PSR breaches, with the Merseyside club later being given an eight-point reduction, while Forest were docked four points.

Awoniyi won’t leave Forest
13:49 , Mike Jones
Taiwo Awoniyi won’t be leaving Nottingham Forest this month unless they have a new striker to replace him.
West Ham have Awoniyi on their list of possible forward targets, but have yet to make an approach. The forward slipped down the pecking order for Forest this season, after falling behind 12-goal Chris Wood.
Wood himself is close to agreeing a contract extension. Awoniyi has only started two Premier League matches this term.
Leicester medical for Coulibaly
13:34 , Mike Jones
Leicester City are close to completing the signing Parma right-back Woyo Coulibaly.
It is understood that the defender is in the UK to complete a medical with the Foxes after the two clubs agreed a deal in principle for the player.
The 25-year-old is a versatile defender who can also play left-back which boosts the options for Ruud van Nistelrooy’s team.
The Foxes also want to sign a left-winger and a centre-back during this window if they can.
Napoli looking for Kvaratskheila replacements
13:19 , Mike Jones
Napoli striker Khvicha Khvaratskheila looks set to leave the club during this window and as such the Serie A side are moving to replace him.
Napoli are said to be keen on Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho, though they may find it difficult to prise him away from Old Trafford and Timo Werner.
Werner is on loan at Tottenham from RB Leipzig and seemingly offers the easier solution.
Paris Saint-Germain have reached a verbal agreement with Napoli of approximately £63m (€75m) to sign Khvaratskhelia.
Gunners poised to land Zubimendi
13:10 , Sam Turner
With all the attention focussed on which striker Arsenal will sign in the January window, news has emerged that the Gunners are all but certain to land primary target Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi at the end of the season.
Mikel Arteta is known to be a long-term admirer of the 25-year-old Spanish star and, with Jorginho and Thomas Partey both out of contract at the end of the season, the club have accelerated their interest in Zubimendi.
Arsenal are reported by The Mail to have triggered Zubimendi’s €60million (£51m) release cause and would have ideally liked one of Europe’s leading midfield talents to join them this month, but Real Sociedad have insisted he stays until the end of the campaign.
Tel still in Bayern’s plan
13:03 , Mike Jones
Bayern Munich winger Mathys Tel still has a part to play at the club according to sporting director Christoph Freund amid rumours linking him to Chelsea.
Freund said: “Tel is a very important player for us, we are in very good contact because he’s a great talent and should play an important role for us.
“We have had many discussions. Our clear goal is for Mathys to make his breakthrough with us. We are very happy with our squad, quality and quantity-wise.
“Of course, if a player is unhappy, we can talk about it. Our clear plan with Mathys is for him to make his breakthrough here.”
Will Almiron leave Newcastle?
12:48 , Mike Jones
Rumours continue to link Miguel Almiron with a move after from Newcastle. Manager Eddie Howe provided an update saying:
“There’s no situation (with Almiron). He’s here every day, fighting for his place in the team. I’ve not heard anything. He’s an important part of the squad.”
Hurzeler on Ferguson’s future
12:33 , Mike Jones
Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler has commented on the future of forward Evan Ferguson. The striker has missed the last four games due to an ankle injury.
“It’s very important that Evan gets back on the pitch,” said the German, “At the moment he suffers because of his injury but also he proved why he’s here and playing for Brighton. He’s a player that comes from the youth academy and that’s also the way from the club.
“We will negotiate the same with Evan. What is important for him, what is important for his development. Where can he improve the best and then we will make a decision together.
“This decision should be chosen, what’s the best for the player and for the club. I’m not thinking about making the other teams better, it’s more about what is the best for the player.”
Villa adamant Duran is not for sale
12:18 , Sam Turner
Aston Villa have slapped a price tag in excess of £100m on Jhon Duran with Barcelona and PSG reported to be tracking the talented striker’s progress this season.
The 21-year-old Colombian, who made it known he was open to a move in the summer transfer window, has since committed his future to Villa Park by signing a new long-term contract in the face of interest from Chelsea and West Ham.
The Athletic report that both Barcelona and PSG have identified Duran as a target, but Villa boss Unai Emery is adamant his young striker is going nowhere this January.
Manchester City agree deal in principle for Palmeiras teenager Vitor Reis
12:04 , Mike Jones
Manchester City are closing in on the signing of teenage Palmeiras centre-back Vitor Reis with an agreement in principle reached, the PA news agency understands.
The 19-year-old Brazilian looks set to join the Premier League champions for a fee in the region of £30million.
And City are also understood to be working to bring in another central defender in Lens’ Uzbekistan international Abdukodir Khusanov.

Aboukhal tops Wolves January targets
11:52 , Sam Turner
In-form Toulouse forward Zakaria Aboukhal has emerged as a leading transfer target of relegation-threatened Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The 24-year-old winger, contracted to the Ligue 1 side until June 2026, has been integral to his side’s excellent first half of the season, scoring six of their 19 league goals and providing two assists to lift Toulouse to eighth.
Having sold Pedro Neto to Chelsea in the summer, Wolves are short on wide players and Aboukhal would fit the profile of player sought by new coach Vitor Pereira according to Foot Mercacto.
Gabriel Jesus injury update as Mikel Arteta ‘very worried’ for Arsenal striker
11:37 , Jamie Braidwood
Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus has suffered a suspected anterior cruciate ligament injury with Mikel Arteta admitting he is “very worried” for the Brazilian.
Jesus was stretchered off during Arsenal’s FA Cup defeat to Manchester United on Sunday and is set to see a specialist to determine the full extent of the injury.
“It’s not looking good at all, but we need to review with the specialist and will have more information this afternoon,” Arteta told a press conference on Tuesday.
“I don’t want to confirm anything until we have the final report this afternoon. We were very worried straight after the game and we are very worried today.”
Dortmund enter race for Rashford
11:08 , Sam Turner
With a potential move to West Ham United reportedly cooling, Marcus Rashford’s representatives have met with Borussia Dortmund to discuss the possibility of the out-of-favour Manchester United forward joining in January.
Sky Sport Germany report that the Bundesliga outfit, currently eighth in the League following a modest run of form, are keen to add power to their front line after sustaining a first home defeat of the season last Friday at the hands of German champions Bayer Leverkusen.
Arsenal in race for Nico Williams and Lee Kang In
10:53 , Mike Jones
A couple of Arsenal nuggets from David Ornstein of The Athletic. Firstly, the Gunners are looking at highly-rated Athletic Bilbao and Spain forward Nico Williams.
Mikel Arteta would love to sign Williams during this window but finances make it unlikely and the player himself is not agitating to leave Bilbao. His release clause €60m (although it fluctuates with inflation) and would need to be paid in full, meaning a summer move is more likely.
Arsenal face competition to sign the 22-year-old, as Chelsea are high on his list of suitors, while Liverpool looked into the viability of a deal last summer.
The Gunners may also be interested in PSG’s South Korean forward Lee Kang In. The 23-year-old is open to a new challenge and Barcelona’s interest may force Arsenal to come forward, having previously expressed interest although the price (at least double the €22m PSG paid to sign him from Mallorca in 2023) is considered off-putting.
Man City in talks to sign 20-year-old Uzbekistan international defender
10:38 , Mike Jones
Manchester City are in talks with Lens about a deal for the Uzbekistan centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov.
The French club’s manager, Will Still, confirmedKhusanov could leave this month as City look to make him their first January signing. He left Lens’ training ground due to illness and the 20-year-old, who joined Lens in 2023, may have played his last game for the club.
Still said: “We’re not going to lie to each other. We know that there are negotiations in progress, things are moving. We’re not fooled. For the moment, he’s still here and if things were to move, you’ll probably know before me. He went home because he’s really sick. If he’s still available, he’ll be in the squad.

Man Utd eye Dorgeles
10:36 , Mike Jones
Manchester United have added Nene Dorgeles to their list of options for the January transfer window says Fabrizio Romano. The transfer expert wrote on Twitter/X:
“Manchester United add Nene Dorgeles from RB Salzburg to their list of options for January/summer.
“Malian winger being monitored by the club and initial talks to be informed on the price/package took place. Man United keep working on that before making decision.”
At this stage, United’s interest seems to be passing/monitoring so expect movement closer to the end of the window if the Red Devils want to progress further than scouting the 22-year-old.
Liverpool have ‘started talks’ with Greek wonderkid
10:31 , Mike Jones
Liverpool are upping their interest in FC Nurnberg wonderkid Stefanos Tzimas.
The Reds are understood to have ‘started talks’ with the Bundesliga 2 outfit over a potential summer transfer for the 19-year-old talent who is currently valued at £20m plus add-ons.
Florian Plettenberg revealed on Twitter/X that Arne Slot’s outfit have ‘spoken to the player’s camp’.
Tzimas is a Greek forward and Liverpool’s interest in him come hint at their plans to eventually replace Mo Salah if they cannot agree a contract renewal.

Spurs still in for Kolo Muani
10:25 , Mike Jones
Tottenham still have their sights set on signing Randal Kolo Muani.
The PSG forward had seemed likely to join Juventus, but L’Equipe say that the Italian club are unable to cover his salary in full and a loan with an obligation to buy has been ruled out.
If Tottenham can secure his services then it could reignite the back half of their season under Ange Postecoglou.
Multiple clubs interested in Endo
10:11 , Mike Jones
Fulham are considering a move for Liverpool’s Wataru Endo this month according to Caught Offside.
Endo is firmly part of the Liverpool squad but his game time is on a rotational basis and, though he has played a role in the cup campaigns, his Premier League outings tend to be filling in at centre-back instead of his usual midfield role.
Fulham feel as though they can get their man towards the end of the January transfer window with Wolves, Ipswich, AC Milan and Celtic also being linked for the Japan international.
Graham Potter on Evan Ferguson links
09:58 , Mike Jones
West Ham have been linked with signing Brigton’s Evan Ferguson during this window but new manager Graham Potter refused to be drawn into a conversation about that when chatting to the media.
He said: “He’s a player that is not a West Ham player, and until he’s a West Ham player I won’t speak about anybody we’ve got enough good players here and that’s my focus at the moment. Does that apply to Dewsbury-Hall as well? It does.”
Jesus has suspected ACL injury
09:45 , Mike Jones
Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus is thought to have suffered an injury to his ACL.
The 27-year-old picked up the injury in Sunday’s FA Cup third round defeat to Manchester United and it seems doubtful that the 27-year-old will play again this season should the injury be as serious as believed.
If Jesus is on the sidelines for the rest of the season then Mikel Arteta’s hand might be forced to go into the transfer market and bring in a striker. Bukayo Saka is another long-term absentee and Ethan Nwaneri is also injured.
Arsenal have wanted a forward for a while but were seemingly waiting for the right option in terms of price and one that suits Arteta’s style of play.
The Arsenal boss speaks at a press conference this morning and may provide more insight.
Kvaratskheila close to PSG move
09:39 , Mike Jones
Paris Saint-Germain are closing in on a ‘full verbal agreement’ with Napoli for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, says Ben Jacobs.
The French side have agreed personal terms with the striker who will sign a deal until 2029 and possible increase his salary by three or four times his current wages if other rumours are to be true.
PSG previously claimed that they were confident of signing the Georgia international for less than Napoli’s original €80m asking price and they may have pulled that off.
Kvaratskheila also had interest from clubs in the Premier League with Liverpool previously monitoring his situation. Should the forward move to France it increases the likelihood that the Reds keep hold of Darwin Nunez as no replacement would be coming in.
Liverpool reject offer for Darwin Nunez
09:24 , Mike Jones
Liverpool have reportedly turned down an offer for Darwin Nunez, according to Anfield Watch.
Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal apparently sent in a verbal offer in the region of £70m which was turned down as the Reds want a higher price for their forward.
That price is thought to be closer to the £85m mark but the club are said to be open to compromise and may settle for a bid closer to £75m.
Chief executive, Michael Edwards, is also said to be handling negotiations for here on in.
This update is firmly in the rumour category as it feels unlikely that Liverpool let any of their players go in this window when the opportunity for a quadruple is still open.
Kyle Walker latest: Inter join Milan for Man City captain
09:10 , Jamie Braidwood
Kyle Walker could feature for Manchester City tonight as Inter joined AC Milan in the race to sign the England international.
City captain Walker, 34, has indicated his desire to leave the Premier League champions this month and a Seria A move looks likely.
Manager Pep Guardiola said on Tuesday: “I don’t have any news. We’ll decide after training. I’m not going to add anything else. It is Brentford on my mind.”
Napoli step up Alejandro Garnacho interest
08:50 , Jamie Braidwood
Napoli are interested in Alejandro Garnacho but Manchester United are said to value the winger at £42m.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has been linked with an exit from Napoli this month and Antonio Conte’s side are looking to bring in a replacement.
Garnacho started United’s FA Cup win at Arsenal on Sunday but Ruben Amorim’s side may have to sell this month due to PSR.
Aston Villa agree Donyell Malen deal
08:30 , Jamie Braidwood
Aston Villa are set to bring in attacking reinforcements with a £19m move for Borussia Dortmund forward Donyell Malen agreed.
The Dutch international is set to cost £19m deal, with Unai Emery looking to add options ahead of the return of the Champions League.
Arsenal revive interest in Dusan Vlahovic?
08:08 , Jamie Braidwood
Arsenal could revive their interest in Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic after backing out of a bid for Newcastle’s Alexander Isak.
The Gunners are looking to step up their interest in a forward after Sunday’s FA Cup defeat to Manchester United.
Mikel Areta’s side have struggled to score goals of late while Gabriel Jesus has joined Bukayo Saka on the sidelines.
Vlahovic is one to watch, according to reports in Italy.
Nunez up for sale?
08:00 , Mike Jones
Put this rumour down as questionable.
Football Insider are saying that Liverpool are willing to sell Darwin Nunez if their valuation for the Uruguayan is met.
The club apparently want between £50m-£60m for the striker in order to green light any potential move.
Nunez has been linked with a switch to Newcastle in recent weeks but that figure would seemingly be a high one for the Magpies who are wary of breaching PSR.
The more likely option is that the Reds hold on to Nunez in case the club cannot come to an agreement with Mo Salah over a contract extension.
Expect no movement in January but maybe one to watch out for in the summer when more details are known.
Chelsea move for Bayern star Mathys Tel
07:53 , Jamie Braidwood
Chelsea have contacted Bayern Munich over a move for winger Mathys Tel, according to multiple reports. The 19-year-old French youth international had a breakout season last year.
The move could depend on Christopher Nkunku heading in the other direction. The France international has struggled since moving to Stamford Bridge and is looking to return to the Bundesliga, where he was named player of the season during his final campaign with RB Leipzig.
