Tottenham injury update: Micky van de Ven, James Maddison, Cristian Romero latest news and return dates
Tottenham enter 2024 with two new injury concerns but hoping to soon welcome two others back to full fitness.
Both Pape Matar Sarr and Alejo Veliz were forced off against Bournemouth in tears and are set to undergo scans, but Micky van de Ven is now just a couple weeks away from returning after two months out. James Maddison should follow soon after.
Cristian Romero is another injury from the festive period, having been forced off against Everton, and faces another month on the sidelines as one of now eight first-team players ruled out.
Here is all the latest Tottenham injury news and potential return dates.
Cristian Romero
The defender picked up an injury during the win over Everton over the festive period. Ange Postecoglou was initially fairly positive about the damage but days later confirmed Romero would be out for "four or five weeks".
He told reporters: "He had a scan the other day and has got a hamstring strain. We are looking at probably four or five weeks for him."
Potential return date: February 2024
Pape Matar Sarr
Pape Matar Sarr was in tears after being forced off against Bournemouth on New Year's Eve, with the young midfielder set to soon after depart for the Africa Cup of Nations.
Postecoglou said after the game: "Pape felt his hamstring and he's emotional because he wants to go away with his national team. It's a big tournament for them. It's kind of the way our season has gone. He was so good again early in the game, apart from his goal, and then he gets an injury.
"Disappointing for him but I am hoping it is not too serious and he can still go away and contribute to his country.
Sarr appeared to allay fears of a significant lay-off shortly afterwards, posting on X (formerly Twitter): "More fear than harm, see you at CAN [AFCON]!"
Depending on how well Senegal perform at AFCON, Sarr may not be back in a Spurs shirt until February.
Potential return date: February 2024
James Maddison
The England playmaker has not featured since suffering an ankle injury in the chaotic London derby defeat by Chelsea on November 6.
A subsequent scan showed the severity of the issue and a frustrated Maddison is not expected back until the New Year.
Postecoglou said on December 22: "[He is] nowhere near being in the reckoning for any first-team duties yet."
Potential return date: January 2024
Micky van de Ven
Like Maddison, Van de Ven was also forced off against Chelsea having suffered a hamstring injury.
But he seems to be making good progress with his recovery as he targets a return in the opening weeks of January.
Postecoglou said on December 27: "He's getting closer. We'll see him sometime in January. I don't think Burnley [in the FA Cup], but Manchester United, I think, potentially."
Potential return date: January 2024
Alejo Veliz
The young striker was another to be forced off with injury after a clash with a Bournemouth player. Having only been introduced in the 82nd minute, Veliz tried to continue after the incident was it quickly become apparent he was unable to.
In quite distressing scenes, Veliz was visibly very upset as he hobbled to the touchline and was quickly consoled by his team-mates on the bench.
Postecoglou said afterwards: "Alejo was in a lot of pain and we'd already done our substitutions so we were trying to get it out to him to just lay down so we can get him off, but it just shows the character of the boy because he knew we had no more substitutions and he just wanted to keep going.
"I'm not sure the extent of what he's done but we'll find out."
Potential return date: Unknown
Ivan Perisic
Perisic is not expected to play again this season after suffering a serious ACL injury in training back in September.
The Croatian international is out of contract in the summer and may have played his final game for Tottenham.
Potential return date: Summer 2024
Ryan Sessegnon
Sessegnon last featured for Spurs in February as he continues to be plagued by hamstring trouble.
While it was believed he had returned to light training, Postecoglou revealed earlier this month that Sessegnon had suffered "a number of setbacks" and refused to put a timeline on his return.
Potential return date: Unknown
Manor Solomon
Summer signing Solomon has been out since undergoing knee surgery at the start of October.
Spurs recently released images of the forward continuing his rehabilitation by himself in the gym, and he is not expected to return until January at the earliest.
