'Heartbroken': 19-year-old hockey star dies after freak accident

The ice hockey world has been rocked by the tragic death of 19-year-old star Timur Faizutdinov, who died after being struck in the head by a puck.

A defenseman for Dinamo St Petersburg in Russia's Junior Hockey League (MHL), Faizutdinov was hit by a puck during a playoff game against Loko Yaroslavl last Friday.

The 19-year-old collapsed to the ice and was rushed to hospital in Yaroslavl, a city located 250 kilometres northeast of Moscow.

However officials announced the devastating news on Tuesday that Faizutdinov had died.

The MHL said Faizutdinov died after "doctors fought for Timur's life over the course of three days."

"You are forever Dinamo and forever in our hearts," his team wrote on Instagram.

Hockey world pays tribute to Timur Faizutdinov

Igor Larionov II, a star for Kunlun Redstar, wrote on social media: "The world is heartbroken over the loss of Timur Faizutdinov.

"A routine play ended up taking the life of this incredible young man.

"Never take a moment for granted. Live everyday to the fullest & know you are worth so much.

"The hockey world lost a brother today. RIP Timur."

Hockey Canada tweeted: “We are saddened by the tragedy in Russia. Our condolences to the family, friends and teammates of Timur Faizutdinov.”

While the Russian Hockey Federation said: “The RIHF extends its deepest condolences to Timur’s family and friends."

For the rest of the month, Junior Hockey League and Kontinental Hockey League games will begin with a moment of silence to honour Faizutdinov, who had been named captain of Dynamo at the start of the season.

Dynamo and Loko started their most recent game by honouring their fallen teammate.

Fans have also been laying flowers and floral tributes to Faizutdinov at a makeshift memorial set up outside the Yubileyny Sports Palace.
