Federer and Nadal make more history with six-year high

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have managed to achieve a rare feat that we haven't seen from the tennis legends since 2011.

On the eve of the Rogers Cup in Canada, Federer and Nadal are both well at the top of their respective games - and the tournament's seedings have reflected that.

With Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka all out of action because of injury, Nadal is seeded No.1 and Federer No.2.

It's the first time since Monte Carlo in 2011 that Federer and Nadal have been the top two seeds at a tournament.

Although the US Open lead-up event is missing a number of male stars, tournament director Eugene Lapierre says Federer and Nadal are the only stars he needs.

"I'm sorry for those players but the story of the year in 2017 is two names — Federer and Nadal," Lapierre said recently.

"Those two guys are here and they will be competing for No.1 in the world in the next few tournaments.

"Nadal maybe here. If he reaches the semi-final it would clinch the No.1 spot. So he has that in his mind for sure."

With the two great rivals on opposite sides of the draw, fans are frothing over the possibility of another Federer-Nadal final.

"It's like we're back 10 years ago when these guys were at the top of their game," said Lapierre.

"And both are playing as good as they've ever played.

"So everyone will be following those players, trying to see if they will go the distance. But it's not going to be easy because there are also other very good players in this draw."

After injury-plagued seasons in 2016, Federer and Nadal were ranked 16 and 9 in the world respectively.

But both have experienced incredible resurgences in 2017 and are in a two-way battle for Murray's No.1 ranking.

Federer has won two of the three grand slams so far this year - at the Australian Open and Wimbledon - while Nadal won his 10th French Open.

Outside of the grand slams Federer has titles at Indian Wells, Miami and Halle, while Nadal has won Barcelona, Monte Carlo and Madrid.
