Serena heaps praise on women's advocate Andy Murray

Serena Williams has heaped praise on Andy Murray for championing women's tennis after his Wimbledon press conference went viral.

An injured Murray fell to American Sam Querrey in their quarter-final meeting on Wednesday but it was the Scot's post-match comments that drew the headlines.

An American journalist noted that Querrey was the first US player to reach a major semi-final since 2009 but was interrupted by Murray, who noted his conquerer was the first male player.

Williams, who took out the Australian Open in January while pregnant and is sitting out the rest of the year, has won 14 of her 23 grand slams since the start of 2009.

Speaking the day after Murray's comments, Williams lauded the three-time major champion.

"There really shouldn't be a female athlete that is not totally supportive of Andy Murray," she said on ESPN.

"He has spoken up for women's issues and women's rights, especially in tennis, for forever. He does it again, you know? That's who he is, that's one thing that we love about him.

"He has such a wonderful mother, who's been such a strong figure in his life. He's done so much for us on our tour, so we love Andy. We love Andy Murray."

While Serena watches from home Venus Williams could complete a family hat-trick at Wimbledon, having progressed to the final on Thursday night.

Venus defeated Britain's home hope Johanna Konta 6-4 6-2 to set up a championship match with Garbine Muguruza.

“I have to believe that (Venus can win)," Serena told Yahoo Sports.

"And I know she has to believe that. We work so many years for these moments that she has right now, and I’m really happy for her."

The road to the final hasn’t been easy for the oldest Williams sister, and Serena recognises the challenges that Venus has gone through.

Diagnosed with Sjögrens Syndrome in 2011, Venus has had to withdraw from tournaments in the past due to injury, illness and fatigue associated with her disease.

“She’s been through her illness, and she keeps fighting through it, and it would just mean so much, not just for her but for people who suffer what she suffers just to realize that this isn’t, this doesn’t have to be it,” Serena said.

“You can go through what she goes through and still come out on top.”
