Thiem travels 3000km to lose to No.222 in one hour

Dominic Thiem's Wimbledon preparations have taken another hit after India's Ramkumar Ramanathan defeated the Austrian 6-3 6-2 in the second round of the Antalya Open.

Thiem, who reached the French Open semi-finals earlier in June, lasted just 59 minutes and 44 seconds as the top seed of the Turkish tournament.

The loss extended the world No.8's poor lead-in to the grass major.

Thiem lost to world No.42 Robin Haase in his second match at Halle one week ago before travelling almost 3000km for the inaugural Antalya Open.

His early loss means another four hours in the air to arrive in London earlier than expected.

For Ramanathan, who won two qualifying matches to make the main draw in Antalya, the victory was a crowning achievement.

His previous best win came against the world No.68 Rogerio Dutra Silva - in the first round of the tournament on Monday.

Prior to that he had just two wins over top-100 opponents, with one coming in 2013 and the other in 2016.

On Tuesday against Thiem the 22-year-old hit 10 aces and gave his opponent just one break-point opportunity.

“I just gave it my best and was serving well out there," Ramanathan said.

"Two or three points can often make the difference on grass. It’s a good start for my career, but it’s just a start. Hopefully I can keep it going."
