Stosur upset by teenager in French Open fourth round

Sam Stosur's Roland Garros run has been stopped in its tracks in the fourth round after unheralded Latvian Jelena Ostapenko defeated the Australian 2-6 6-2 6-4 on Sunday night.

The No.23 seed appeared to be on her way to a barnstorming victory when she took the first four games of the match in less than 15 minutes.

Although Stosur eventually closed out the first set in 34 minutes the 19-year-old Ostapenko had played her way into the contest and took confidence into the second.

The youngster, who made the third round at the Australian Open in January, had corrected her radar and shocked Stosur with superb ground strokes, hitting 19 winners to send it to a deciding third.

Stosur required medical attention for a wrist/hand problem during the break but bounced onto the court in an attempt to keep her mind in the match.

It was to no avail as Ostapenko continued to land her shots around Court 2 with precision while Stosur, battling a motivated opponent as much as soreness, struggled to get the match back on her terms.

The world No.47 will now face No.11 seed Caroline Wozniack in the quarter-finals after the Dane outlasted No.8 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-1 4-6 6-2 on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
