Federer's incredible gesture for injured Aussie

Injury-plagued Aussie Thanasi Kokkinakis has opened up about the incredible experience of being invited to train with Swiss great Roger Federer.

Kokkinakis trained alongside Federer in Dubai two weeks ago as the 21-year-old continues his comeback from injury.

Federer endured an injury-plagued 2016, but it was nothing compared to what Kokkinakis went through.

Kokkinakis has played just one tournament in the last 18 months because of shoulder, stomach and groin injuries.

But if anyone knows how to get back to their best after suffering multiple injuries, it's Federer.

"I was just trying to get as much information as I could from him," Kokkinakis said in an interview with Sport 360.

"I'm only 21 and he's 35 but I feel like I've still got to kind of manage my body the way that he does to be honest, because I can't put too much load on it, because I don't know what my body can take at the moment."

Federer is on an incredible 19-1 run to start 2017 thanks to titles at the Australian Open, Indian Wells and Miami Open.

The whole tennis world is marvelling at the stunning resurgence, including Kokkinakis, who reckons he's figured out what makes the Swiss Maestro so great.

"What sticks out for me is that he's always working on his game, he's always working on different things where he can improve," Kokkinakis said.

"Trying shots where maybe a standard tennis player wouldn't really consider as a possibility.

"I think that's what has put him that level above for so long and that's what's kept him able to play for so long."

WOODBRIDGE: Why Federer has French Open edge over Nadal

Federer is currently taking a break from the ATP tour but recently ended speculation about his participation in this year's French Open, confirming he will play.

"I am registered and my intention is to play Roland Garros," the 18-time Grand Slam champion said.

Kokkinakis is also targeting a return at the French Open. He hasn't played since teaming up with compatriot Jordan Thompson to win the Brisbane International doubles crown in January.
