Hewitt's massive Davis Cup statement to Tomic

Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt didn't explicitly criticise Bernard Tomic after Australia's win over USA, but the message was loud and clear.

Tomic was left out of the quarter-final tie in Brisbane after making it clear from the outset he would not be keen to play Davis Cup in 2017.

KYRGIOS: Why Australia can win the Davis Cup

WOODBRIDGE: This is a defining moment for Kyrgios

Tomic boasts an impressive 17-4 win-loss Davis Cup record since debuting as a 17-year-old in 2010, but seems to have little interest in representing his country at the prestigious event.

After Nick Kyrgios beat Sam Querrey to seal Australia's spot in the semi-finals, Hewitt was asked about how much the victory meant.

"There's no greater honour than wearing the green and gold and coming out and representing your country," he said.

"I couldn't be prouder of my boys, they've put so much hard work and effort into this whole year and this whole campaign and they deserve this.

"This is what representing Australia is all about."

While not mentioning Tomic's name, the statement was crystal clear.

Even the man who was called up to replace Tomic expressed the same sentiments.

"Wearing the green and gold – there's no greater honour," Jordan Thompson said after his stunning victory over USA's top-ranked player Jack Sock.

"Seeing Rusty (Hewitt) on the sidelines is so inspiring...he left everything on the court in Davis Cup."

Thompson scored the biggest scalp of his career by beating Sock to give the Aussies the perfect start to the tie.

With 22-year-old Thompson desperate to play for his country and only improving every time he hits the court, it's hard to see Tomic coming back into the Davis Cup fold anytime soon.

"The way Thommo went out there and backed himself under pressure, that's how I dreamt of his match playing out and I didn't think it was probably going to happen," Hewitt said.

Thompson remains undefeated in the Davis Cup after winning both of his singles rubbers in February's meeting with the Czech Republic at Kooyong.
