'You are not like that': Tennis umpire says don't be like Shapovalov

An umpire at the Miami Open has offered a surprising critique of Gastao Elias after the Portuguese player hit a ball into the stands in frustration.

Elias had won the first set against Argentine opponent Horacio Zeballos in the first round of the Miami Open but the second was going against him.

When Elias was broken to go down 2-5, he lashed out at the ball with a fierce swing towards the fans.

Almost immediately after he sat down, umpire Carlos Bernardes began speaking to the 26-year-old.

Portuguese tennis journalist Jose Morgado translated Bernardes as saying: "If you do the same thing that the other 'unlucky' (player) did ... Don't do that. You are not like that, I know you."

While Morgado translated 'o outro infeliz' as 'unlucky', the phrase can also mean 'sad' or 'poor'.

The 'unlucky' player in this instance was Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov, who hit an umpire when he lashed out during a Davis Cup tie:

The umpire in that instance, Arnaud Gabas, required surgery to repair a fractured eye socket.

Where Shapovalov was defaulted from his rubber and Canada lost the Davis Cup tie with Great Britain as a result, Elias was allowed to continue.

The match did not get any better, however, as Zeballos secured the second set with the next game and won the third set 7-5 to progress to the next round.
