Commentating for Channel 7, Rennae Stubbs was furious umpire Eva Asderaki didn't issue the American a warning.
"I am in shock that Eva Asderaki did not give her a warning, that was hit in anger into the crowd," Stubbs said. "That's usually an instant warning. I'm surprised, Eva's such a good umpire, to not give her that warning.
"The reason that upsets me is that's a rule. If you hit a ball into the stands in anger, that's an automatic warning.
"To not give the warning sets a tone or precedent that you can get away with it, and that ambiguity is what drives players crazy."
Vandeweghe has a history of losing her temper, smashing multiple racquets in her short career.
Men's World No.2 Novak Djokovic copped a fine for hitting a ball into the crowd earlier this year.
