Daniil Medvedev's sad message to wife and daughter as Australian Open speech praised

Daniil Medvedev has won over the tennis world once again with a beautiful message to his family back at home after he was left shattered having lost his third Australian Open final. Jannik Sinner produced an all-time Australian Open comeback having defeated Medvedev 3-6 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-3 in a rollercoaster grand slam final.

Unfortunately for Medvedev, it is the second time he has lost the Australian Open final having taken a two-set lead. In 2022, Medvedev was on the verge of victory against Rafa Nadal before the Spaniard stormed home to win his second title at Melbourne Park.

Fans around the world praised Sinner, but also showed sympathy for Medvedev who looked crushed after coming so close again to lifting the trophy at the Australian Open. In 2022, Medvedev admitted the "kid had stopped dreaming' after losing to Nadal in the final amid a number of tough run-ins with the Aussie crowd.

This year, Medvedev had won over the Melbourne Park faithful with his quirky attitude and post-match interviews. And while many would forgive the Russian to have shown his utter disappointment during the trophy presentation, Medvedev was all class.

“First of all I want to congratulate you Jannik because today he showed again why he deserves it, you fought till the end, managed to raise your level, you and your team are doing an amazing job,” a devastated Medvedev said. “You waited a lot of tournaments, winning a lot of matches and probably that is not your last grand slam but I hope I can try to get the next one if we play in the final because I’ve been in three finals in a row so I’ll try my best to do better next time, but really big congratulations and you deserve it.”

But it was the moment Medvedev thanked his family back at home that had the tennis world in tears. “I don’t know if they turned off the TV, but Dasha, Alisa, if you’re watching, it felt like you were there with me," Medvedev said as he slowed down to thank his family.

"Unfortunately I couldn’t make it today. But I’m gonna try to make it work next time for you.” The tennis world, including Australia's Daria Saville, were all emotional during Medvedev's speech having watched on as the Russian felt the agony of losing yet another grand slam final.

The 27-year-old also reserved some special praise for the Australian Open crowd at the end of his speech. Australia has embraced the enigmatic Russian throughout his historic run to the final, which has seen him spend more hours on court than any other player in history at a grand slam during the open era.

“I just want to thank everyone, it has been honestly an amazing two weeks, it always hurts to lose in the final but probably being in the final is better than losing before,” Medvedev added. “I always want to win but I guess, yeah, I have to try harder next time, but I’m proud of myself and I’m going to try even harder next time. Thank you, guys.”

Sinner admitted he felt sorry for Medvedev having come so close again, but also sent a special message to his team. "I want to thank everyone for making this so special," he said at the trophy presentation.

"My team there, everyone who is in this box, also working from home who works with me, we are trying to get better every day. Even during the tournament we tried to get stronger, trying to understand every situation a little bit better so I'm so glad to have you there supporting me, understanding me, which sometimes is not easy because I am still a little bit young sometimes."
