Kyrgios cops huge punishment for 'disgraceful' Miami Open incident
The ATP has come down hard on Nick Kyrgios after slapping the Aussie with a whopping $US35,000 ($A47,000) fine his explosive outburst at the Miami Open.
In scenes described as "disgraceful" by many tennis fans, Kyrgios angrily berated the chair umpire and received a game penalty after a number of code violations in a straight-sets loss to Jannik Sinner at the Miami Open on Tuesday.

After repeatedly berating umpire Carlos Bernardes for failing to control the crowd at the Masters 1000 tournament on Tuesday, Kyrgios received a point penalty in the first set tiebreak for telling a friend in the stands he could do a better job officiating.
The Australian then received a game penalty - putting Italian Sinner up a break at the start of the second set - after repeatedly yelling, "What is unsportsmanlike?" to Bernardes, and then walked to his bench, where he whacked his racquet repeatedly against his bag and the court.
The ATP said on Thursday Kyrgios was fined $US5,000 for audible obscenity, $US10,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct and $US20,000 for verbal abuse.
Asked after the match about his behaviour, Kyrgios defended his character while taking another swipe at the umpire.
"He's not even going to get a slap on the wrist for his dreadful umpiring performance today. Like, he was horrendous," the Australian said.
The huge fine from Miami marks the second time in less than a month that Kyrgios has been reprimanded for bad behaviour on the court.
He was also hit with a $25,000 ($A33,000) at Indian Wells earlier in March after losing his temper in a quarter-final to Rafael Nadal, after which he smashed his racquet to the ground and it bounced up and almost hit a ball boy.
Calls for serial offender Nick Kyrgios to be banned
While Kyrgios has been hit with a heavier fine for this latest incident, many fans were calling on the ATP to come even down harder on the serial offender after the Miami outburst.
The argument from many in the tennis world is that fines are simply not an effective form of punishment for Kyrgios, with calls for the Aussie to be banned for repeated bad behaviour.
“Kyrgios has been given plenty of chances through the years and been cut plenty of slack by the tour,” American writer Christopher Clarey tweeted.
“He is not a kid anymore. His misbehaviour on court is a clear pattern of behaviour. ATP is right to crack down.”
Journalist James Gray commented: “Cannot believe Nick Kyrgios has not been disqualified more in his career.
"Tennis doesn't have the kind of official abuse problem football has but it’s still damaging for the grassroots game for elite players to act like this.”
Y’all ain’t worth a single damn. Spineless and the sorriest sports organization. Continue to enable abusers every tournament. Nick Kyrgios needs to be banned, no suspended, not fined.
BANNED. @atptour— Christian (@x_christixn) March 29, 2022
Not good enough to fine Kyrgios for this, he doesnt care.
If you banned him from the next slam he was planning on playing, that would hurt him. https://t.co/t02bIhz8e5— James Gray (@jamesgraysport) March 29, 2022
Again and again! Kyrgios should be banned from tennis! It’s not funny anymore. He is an embarrassment to the game of tennis
